The Wedding Veil
Book Summary
Julia Baxter’s wedding veil has been in her family since the 1930s, when her great-grandmother received it from a mysterious woman on a train. Each generation of women in her family has seen the veil as a symbol of a happy marriage. But Julie can’t see a happy vision for her future. On the day of her wedding, she flees to the Virgin Islands instead of walking down the aisle.
One hundred years earlier, Edith Vanderbilt was struggling to maintain order at her 250-room Biltmore Estate after her husband’s death. Despite the family’s deteriorating finances, Edith is also trying to prepare her daughter, Cornelia, to inherit the estate. But Cornelia is torn—does she want to embrace tradition or explore the rapidly changing world beyond the Biltmore’s gates?
A third storyline follows Julia’s free-spirited grandmother in the present day, along with her unexpected late-in-life love interest.
The Book Girls Say…
This novel follows four women from two families and their interconnected experiences with the same wedding veil throughout history. Readers say that while it’s the first partially historical fiction novel from Kristy Woodson Harvey, she maintains her signature wit and warmth in this new-to-her genre.

The Gown: A Novel of the Royal Wedding

100% Would Recommend to a Friend
Book Summary
The Gown takes us inside the workrooms of Norman Harnell’s famed fashion house, where one of the most famous wedding gowns in history was created for Princess Elizabeth. Here, we meet Ann and Miriam, two embroiderers still dealing with ratios in post-war England.
Seventy years later, Heather seeks to unravel the mystery of a set of embroidered flowers left behind by her late grandmother, who never spoke of her life in Britain.
The Book Girls Say…
This is the first book Melissa read that focused on the years right AFTER the war. While making the gown is important to the story and fascinating, it’s not what you’ll remember. The story is much broader, and we think you’ll love this step back into the post-war years.
HEADS UP: There is a sexual assault scene in the book that some readers may find challenging.

Book Summary
As she plans her daughter’s wedding, Marcy is also trying to finalize her divorce after a long marriage. She’s been separated long enough for a new boyfriend to push for a commitment, but now her ex-husband Harvey wants to get back together, too.
Marcy’s too busy with the wedding to deal with her own man problems. It turns out weddings bring out the worst in everyone. And it doesn’t help that her daughter’s new in-laws keep stealing items everywhere they go!
As Marcy realizes that it might be impossible to keep everyone happy, she knows it’s time to make the hard choice between old and new.
The Book Girls Say…
We’ve both read this book and loved the storyline of planning her daughter’s wedding. Some of you are probably familiar with how hectic that can be!
While writing this description, we were shocked to learn that there is another book, Lift and Separate, that covers Marcy’s split from Harvey after he cheats on her with a 21-year-old. But Husbands and Other Sharp Objects reads just as well as a stand-alone.

The Island Villa
Book Summary
Despite decades of success as a romance author, Catherine’s personal love story hasn’t been as successful. Three failed marriages have strained her relationship with her daughters, but she’s counting on a family wedding on the Greek island of Corfu to bring them all back together.
Adeline isn’t sure what’s worse – that her mother is getting married for a fourth time, or that she’ll have to travel all the way to her mother’s luxury villa in Corfu to witness what is sure to be a trainwreck. She is still scarred by her parents’ divorce and her mother’s infidelity. She doesn’t blame her half-sister, Cassie, the result of that infidelity, but she’s also never bothered to get to know her.
Cassie, on the other hand, is thrilled by the news of the wedding and sees it as a sign of her mother’s resilience. And the idea of spending her summer in Corfu is a bonus.
When the sisters arrive on the island, they have very different expectations and both are keeping secrets of their own from their mother. All will be revealed before the wedding day, for better or worse.
The Book Girls Say…
They say, “Don’t judge a book by the cover,” and we’ll add, “Don’t judge an author by their cover.” While the cover of this book is beautiful, it’s not geographically accurate. We’ve read and been big fans of several Sarah Morgan books in recent years, especially enjoying how vividly she describes her settings. Therefore, we assume that the cover discrepancy reflects that Sarah was not given control over the final design decision.
The cover depicts the iconic white-washed buildings, blue domes, and perched cliffs of the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea. While this landscape may be deemed quintessentially Greek, it does not reflect the Corfu setting in the novel. Corfu, located west of mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea, is instead known for its Venetian architecture. Take a look at these photos if you’d like to visualize the setting of the book more accurately.
