Daisy Jones & the Six Book Summary

This novel chronicles the meteoric rise of a fictional, iconic 1970s rock band, The Six, and their heedlessly beautiful lead singer, Daisy Jones.

With Daisy Jones, Taylor Jenkins Reid created the perfect behind-the-scenes look at the music industry and how it affects musicians’ relationships – both within the band and with others. While some handle it well and find performing an escape, others fall into dark phases using alcohol and drugs as their retreat.

The story is told through a series of “behind the music” style interviews that will make you feel like you are right there with them in the hard-partying, 70s music scene. As you hear from each band member, the story of these complex characters unfolds, ultimately revealing the mystery behind the band’s infamous breakup.

It’s finally time to share everything, and the truth may be even more shocking than her fans anticipate.

Why This Book Made the List

Like Daisy Jones, this book is told in a documentary-style interview format and is meant to be listened to. We highly recommend the audio version that is narrated in part by real Olympian Johnny Weir. The excellent narration makes this page-turning story even more compelling.

Both books offer behind-the-scenes drama, explore the destructive side of stardom, and feature complex relationships amid media storms and scandalous headlines.

Book Summary

Growing up in Harlem, Benny’s father had ties to the mob. Benny learned that love and family can get you into trouble, so he decided to make music his entire life. But rather than seeking the spotlight, Benny writes songs for other musicians.

That is, until Benny meets Esther – a petite but powerful singer. He writes a song for her, but when they end up performing it together, he’s suddenly thrust into the national spotlight. Not only do music fans take notice, but it also gains the attention of the mob.

In addition to the storyline set in 1960, we read portions of an interview that Benny is giving to a radio show personality, Barry Gray, in 1969. But what happened in between? The answer – like the decade – involves politics, racism, and lots of amazing music.

Thoughts on This Book

Readers say this is a very well-researched and fairly clean historical romance that captures the essence of the 1960s. But note that because of the mob element, there are a few scenes of graphic violence.

Why We Think You’ll Love It

This was one of our favorite books of the last few years, and one that really stuck with both of us! Angela really enjoyed listening to the audiobook because it incorporates music.

Although the main character is a teenager, this is an adult novel, not a YA title. It makes an excellent read because of the perspective that comes from looking back at the years between innocence and maturity. It could prompt a great road trip discussion about your own teen years.

Book Summary

The author of this novel acknowledges in the forward that Daisy Jones & the Six inspired her, so you’ll see some similarities, including the storytelling format.

The book is told through interviews with a fictional band, decades after their rise to fame. Although it covers how Preacher McCade and the Roadmasters redefined a music genre, family is also a big topic. That said, it’s definitely full of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Was The Six a Real Band?

In case you’re wondering if this is an actual band or if the songs in Daisy Jones &The Six are real… The answer is no. The characters and the songs referenced are all works of fiction. However, Taylor Jenkins Reid has revealed in interviews that she was inspired by Fleetwood Mac, their Rumors album, and the love story between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

Daisy Jones & the Six TV Show

Actress and fellow book lover Reese Witherspoon chose this novel as her Reese’s Book Club pick in 2019. Even before the book hit store shelves, Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, acquired the rights for a TV series adaptation.

While we typically subscribe to the notion that the book is always better (a belief we hold so firmly that we’ve put on stickers and tote bags), we also know that Hello Sunshine typically does justice to the books she selects far better than most adaptations! This is thanks in part to her collaborations with the authors. Taylor Jenkins Reid herself served as the executive producer for the series, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Listen to Daisy Jones & the Six Songs

The audiobook has a bonus instrumental track of the song “Honeycomb,” as well as a downloadable PDF with the lyrics to several of the fictional band’s songs, but fans have been wanting more! Fortunately, thanks to the TV adaptation, we can now hear the band! The Daisy Jones & the Six Aurora album is now available on vinyl, or you can stream it on Spotify.
