A Few Things New Jersey is Known For…

The New Jersey Shore, spanning 130 miles of Atlantic coastline, is a vital part of the state’s tourism industry. Renowned for its beautiful beaches, boardwalks, and lively resort towns, it attracts millions of visitors each year. From the Victorian charm of Cape May to the vibrant boardwalk of Atlantic City, the shore offers diverse experiences for every type of visitor.

Despite its relatively small size (it’s the 4th smallest in the US) and high population density, New Jersey also has a significant number of farms. This state produces a wide array of fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products, earning its nickname as the “Garden State.”

New Jersey is a popular place to live for people who work in NYC because of its close proximity to Manhattan and the robust transportation network linking the two. More than two-thirds of New Jersey’s population resides within the counties that are considered part of the New York Metropolitan Area. These residents enjoy a lower cost of living compared to many parts of NYC, more spacious housing, and access to good schools and suburban communities.

Book Summary

Marilyn wasn’t just caught making out with the rabbi’s son—she was caught by the whole congregation! In hopes of saving their daughter’s reputation, her parents sent her to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. They gave her an ultimatum: spend the summer with Ada, the strict, premier matchmaker, or kiss her college plans goodbye.

Based on her mother’s description, Marilyn expects Ada to be a humorless septuagenarian. Instead, Ada is sharp and straight-talking, with platinum blonde hair, a Hermès scarf, and a Cadillac convertible.

Ada and Marilyn set off for Avalon on the Jersey Shore, where Marilyn helps to scope out eligible matches for anyone but herself. She’s learning a lot from Ada—but not exactly what her parents were hoping for. Marilyn realizes that she doesn’t have to settle, even as her father threatens to disinherit her.

I Leave It Up to You book cover

Book Summary

Waking up in 2021 from a two-year coma, Jack’s world is drastically different than the one he remembers. He’s now in his 30s, but he no longer has a job in advertising, his Manhattan apartment, or the love of his life. It had been ten years since he’d seen his family, but with nowhere else to turn, he reluctantly returns to his hometown. Back in the bustling Korean American enclave of Fort Lee, New Jersey, his parents welcome him home as if he never left. Now he can take over the family sushi restaurant just like they always planned.

His days now consist of picking up crates of tuna on bleary-eyed 4 am fish runs with his father, working behind the omakase counter while his mother tallies up earnings from too few customers, sparring with his recovering alcoholic brother, and attempting to be the sage uncle for his gangly teenage nephew. Jack also finds that he can’t get one particular man out of his mind – the nurse who cared for him throughout his coma, whom he’s realizing he has romantic feelings toward.

Is all of this exactly the second chance Jack needed, or will he once again find himself drawn away from the life his family has laid out for him?

The Book Girls Say…

Jack wakes up to a post-Covid world, a period of time that some readers may not yet be ready to relive. While the book is described as humorous in parts, reviewers also describe it as emotional and tragic.

Book Summary

Twelve-year-old Edward boards a plane with his beloved older brother and his parents, bound for their new home and life in California. But when the plane tragically crashes, Edward emerges as the sole survivor. After recovering from his injuries, he goes to live with his mom’s sister and her husband, with the eyes of the world on him. Everyone is eager to hear his story.

His aunt and uncle work hard to shield him from all the attention and to allow him time to process his loss, but when Edward uncovers a stack of letters, he discovers an unexpected path to healing.

The chapters in the book alternate between Edward’s day-to-day life during the three years following the accident and a minute-by-minute recounting of the ill-fated flight, through which we are introduced to many of the other passengers.

The Book Girls Say…

Although the main named character is a teen, this is not a YA book. Half of the book details the experiences of the adults on the plane. As you would expect, this book is heavy in the grief department, so be prepared and keep the tissues close by.

Dear Edward was a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Best Fiction in 2020. Though it is a work of fiction, the author has stated that it was loosely inspired by the 2010 crash of Libyan-operated Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771, in which the sole survivor was a 9-year-old boy. When Ann Napolitano learned about this crash, she said, “This story flayed me. I could not imagine how that boy would be OK and I could feel from the stickiness of my obsession that I was going to have to write a book that created a set of circumstances to make him OK.”

The book has also been adapted into a television series on Apple TV+.

Book Summary

Imagine a Jersey suburb that has remained largely in the 1960s for the past 60 years, and that’s Wyldale. Seventy-year-old widow Varina runs Palladino’s Italian Specialties grocery in between taking care of her 92-year-old mother, Sylvia, and her loud Italian family. Sylvia is very concerned that when she dies, Varina will be alone, so she’s determined to find her a new love.

Donatella, Varina’s daughter, devises an ill-conceived plan to help her mom find a man, and grandmother Sylvia joins in. Meanwhile, Varina is ready to embrace life on her own. She’s booked a trip but has not told the family about it yet. In addition to Varina’s life changes, her three adult sons are going through changes of their own.

The Book Girls Say…

This light multi-generational family drama/romance has been described as a Jersey combination of Moonstruck and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Each chapter begins with a bit of Jersey Italian slang, including the pronunciation, root word, and meaning. It’s a fun aspect of the book that will make you feel like you are in Jersey.

3 books from Stephanie Plum Series

Book Summary

First Book in the Series: One for the Money
Most Recent Book In the Series: Now or Never: Thirty One on the Run

In a twist on the typical detective series, Stephanie Plum is an untrained bounty hunter in New Jersey who only took the job with her creepy cousin, Vinnie, because of a desperate need for some quick cash. The first book in the series introduces you to several zany and endearing characters from Ranger, the hot and secretive former special forces bounty hunter, and Joe Morelli, a former vice cop charged with murder. However, it’s Grandma Mazur who really steals the show.

The Book Girls Say…

While they have a mystery component, these books are most known for their humor and escapism. You have to be willing to accept and laugh at ridiculous circumstances to enjoy them – think sitcom vs. drama. In the early days of these books, it was a favorite series for multiple generations of Melissa’s family.

Stephanie’s “career” as a bounty hunter and relationships with all the other characters evolve in a way that makes the most sense to read in order.

Book Summary

Thirty-five-year-old Mallory’s life is not going according to plan. She caught her soon-to-be ex-husband cheating with his paralegal, she lost her NYC apartment, her job, her money, and her dignity. And she also just lost her beloved great-aunt Maggie.

Aunt Maggie left Mallory her house in the suburbs, which provides her with exactly the fresh start she needs. But it’s not a smooth transition. The house is a hot mess, and the grumpy (but swoon-worthy) next door neighbor, Nick, and the HOA are none too pleased! In fact, the house has no fewer than 47 HOA violations that she’s going to have to remedy if she wants to make a go of her new life in the burbs. Fortunately, she’s got wine and YouTube DIY videos, which makes anything seem doable.

The Book Girls Say…

This is a laugh-out-loud rom-com with some steamy scenes, but it also carries a lot of emotional baggage, including the lasting impacts of emotional and verbal abuse from an ex-spouse. True to real life, you’ll experience the full range of emotions while reading this book.

Hidden Figures book cover

Book Summary

Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a summer job as a live-in nanny for five-year-old Teddy Maxwell in the affluent suburb of Spring Brook, New Jersey. Initially, everything seems ideal: Mallory bonds with Teddy, enjoys her cozy cottage, and appreciates the stability.

Teddy is never without his sketchbook and a pencil, drawing the typical childhood images of trees, rabbits, and balloons. But then, one day, his drawings begin to depict unsettling images—a man dragging a woman’s lifeless body in a forest. The images become increasingly detailed and disturbing, well beyond the abilities of a 5-year-old.

Believing these drawings may depict a past unsolved crime communicated through supernatural means, Mallory becomes determined to uncover the truth. As she delves deeper, she confronts eerie occurrences and long-buried secrets, racing to protect Teddy and herself from a looming danger.

Book Summary

Each summer, the Adler family rents out their Atlantic City home to vacationers and moves into the cramped apartment above their bakery. Their daughters are now young adults, with Florence home from college and Fannie on bed rest during pregnancy following the loss of a baby. Florence plans to spend the summer training to swim across the English Channel.

The small space becomes even more crowded when the father, Joseph, takes in a woman he helped emigrate from Nazi Germany. When a tragedy strikes, her mom Esther begins a web of lies in an attempt to protect her daughter Fannie, but will this really help in the long run?

The Book Girls Say…

This book is a deeper read than the cover suggests, largely centered on a young Jewish girl taking shelter in the US to escape the growing threats as the Nazi party rose to power in Germany. It’s also a family drama with complicated dynamics between generations.

Honey book cover

Book Summary

It wasn’t easy growing up as the teenage daughter of a notorious New Jersey mobster, but Honey managed to escape her father’s circle of influence and created a life for herself working in the world of art and beauty for a high-end auction house in Los Angeles.

Many years later, at the age of 82, Honey returns to her New Jersey hometown seeking to reconcile with her tumultuous past. Not only does she find unexpected love, her homecoming also introduces a cast of characters that further challenge her solitary existence: Jocelyn, a troubled neighbor entangled in an abusive relationship; Nathan, a much younger artist drawn to Honey’s sharp wit and elegance; and her grandnephew Michael, whose personal struggles echo the family’s complex dynamics.

This literary novel depicts love in all its forms, female rage, moral ambiguity, and familial bonds. It paints a portrait of an octogenarian redefining her identity in the twilight of her life.

Book Summary

The Palisades Amusement Park was magical in the 1930s, especially for seven-year-old Toni. She helps out with her parent’s french fry stand along with her brother, Jack. Toni is especially fascinated by the high diver act, even though her mom tells her girls can’t be high divers.

Over the years, the family endures the world’s hard times – from the Great Depression and Pearl Harbor to race riots in the park. Each summer, they came back together at the park until it closed in 1971. The publisher says, “Palisades Park takes us back to a time when life seemed simpler—except, of course, it wasn’t.”

Silent Came the Monster book cover

Book Summary

In 1916, swimming at the Jersey Shore was a relatively new activity. When a swimmer dies and a prominent surgeon, Dr. Halsey, examines the body, he concludes that there has been a shark attack and warns that it will likely happen again. However, no one else believes him. Dr. Halsey finds himself fighting widespread confusion, conspiracy theories, defiance, and outright denial of the shark.

As WW1 rages overseas and an unprecedented outbreak of polio strikes fear into the nation, shark-deniers theories range from a huge mackerel to a giant sea turtle or even a German submarine. Local fishermen and the Lenape tribe also have beliefs about what looms under the water.

The Book Girls Say…

This historical fiction thriller is based on the true story of the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. We recommend waiting until after reading to look into the real events to retain the suspenseful nature of not knowing what is going to happen next.

The Book Girls Say…

One of our favorite authors, Elin Hilderbrand, said, “It’s a coming-of-age novel complicated by a tragic and untimely death, and it’s also a novel about two sisters you will never forget. I fell in love with the confidence of the writing and the colorful nostalgia of the mid-’80s details.”

Book Summary

Published in 1970, this young adult novel broke all the rules by talking to pre-teen girls about sex and religion without being prim or scolding. It’s been read by generation after generation, despite being a commonly banned book.

Margaret is almost twelve and just moved from New York City to New Jersey. She’s relieved to have made new friends and even be included in the secret club where they can talk about boys, bras, and periods. However, the other girls are confused by her lack of structured religion.

Book Summary

The newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty and the wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of World War I.

Across the US, hundreds of girls toiled in the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covered their bodies from head to toe; they lit up the night like industrious fireflies.

With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill. This shocking non-fiction book explores the radium craze and its lasting aftermath.

The Book Girls Say…

We have both read this book, and both highly recommend it! It is heartbreaking and, at times, hard to read because of the terrible illnesses that the women suffer. Still, it’s a riveting account of a little-known and important piece of American history.

The real stories relayed in this book take place in various locations, but a significant portion is set in Orange and Newark, New Jersey. These locations were home to the U.S. Radium Corporation, where many of the early dial-painting workers were employed.

A Beautiful Mind book cover

Book Summary

This is the biography of John Nash, a brilliant mathematician whose groundbreaking work in game theory revolutionized economics. The book traces his journey from a curious and eccentric boy in West Virginia to a Princeton prodigy and MIT professor.

As Nash’s academic star rises, so does the impact of his untreated schizophrenia, which leads to years of delusions, hospitalizations, and personal turmoil. Despite these challenges, Nash gradually recovered and eventually earned the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994.

The Book Girls Say…

While this book spans West Virginia (where John Nash was born and raised) to Santa Monica (where he worked for the RAND Corporation), and Massachusetts, where he taught at MIT, the majority of this book takes place in Princeton, New Jersey, were Nash studied and later worked. The university’s intellectual atmosphere plays a crucial role is shaping his academic life.

This biography was adapted into a 2001 film directed by Ron Howard, which won both the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Directing. The movie differs from the book in that it takes more creative liberties regarding the timeline and key events of Nash’s life. While the book focuses more on Nash’s mathematics and mental health, the film takes a more inspirational tone, focusing more on love and redemption.
