23 Irresistible Meet Cute Romance Books
There’s nothing quite like a good meet-cute to set the stage for an unforgettable romance. If you adore swoon-worthy or humorous first encounters with undeniable sparks, these books are for you!
What is a Meet Cute?
A meet-cute is a charming, often unexpected first encounter between two characters that sets the stage for romance. In a rom-com or romance book, the meet-cute can be funny, awkward, or entirely accidental. It’s the moment when sparks fly (or tempers flare) before love takes hold. While some meet-cutes feel like fate, others come with a bit of chaos, making the eventual romance even sweeter. No matter the circumstances, a great meet-cute will leave you rooting for the couple from the very start.
The Best Meet Cute Books
While each of these books features a great meet-cute moment, but many also include another common rom-com trope (or two or three). We’ve noted the other tropes to help you find the books that are right for you.
Book Summary
What if you literally ran into your middle school celebrity crush? And then what if he turned out to be your new law school classmate?
What starts off with this adorable rom-com premise turns a little deeper when, years later, his family suffers a tragedy and he unexpectedly has to rely on his old law school classmate / super fan.
Kailyn is on track to achieve her goal of making partner at her law firm by age 30, but she never expects Daxton to be the one thing standing between her and her promotion.
The Book Girls Say…
Melissa started this book when she couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night and ended up reading the whole thing! Then she recommended it to Angela who listened to the whole audiobook in one afternoon.
Keep in mind that this one is a bit heavier than some of the other rom-coms on the list because of the tragedy that Daxton experiences. It’s told from a dual POV, so you’ll really feel his grief.
The Happy Ever After Playlist
Book Summary
This story starts on a hilarious note as a lost dog shocks Sloan by jumping through her sunroof during an already rough day. When the owner doesn’t respond to calls, Sloan begins to love the dog, Tucker, as her own.
After several weeks, Tucker’s owner finally contacts her and wants Tucker back. Unfortunately, he’s out of the country and can’t claim Tucker right away, and Sloan isn’t sure he deserves his dog back. She’s been through a terrible two years and the dog has helped her heal.
As they compete over Tucker, flirty messages turn into calls. What will happen when they finally meet face to face?
The Book Girls Say…
If you’ve read The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez, you may recognize Sloan from her role as Kristen’s friend. This book can be read as a great meet-cute standalone, but if you know you want to read the whole Friend Zone series, it’s better to read them in order.
Another book by Jimenez, Just For the Summer, features one of the funniest meet-cutes we’ve read (involving a “Am I the Asshole” story on Reddit). This book is the third in the Part of Your World Series.

Love at First Flight
Book Summary
Pippa is a neurodivergent air traffic controller and loves her job and the voices she speaks to from the planes. She does not love repeating patterns, tight clothes, or people asking why she’s single at school reunions.
Pilot Andrew is also single, and his parents won’t let him forget it. They have good intentions but are making him crazy. While he’s talked to Pippa over the radio for six months, they’ve never met and don’t even know they’re based at the same airport.
After Pippa and Andrew have an unexpected meet-cute moment and begin talking, they realize they can help each other. Andrew will attend Pippa’s ten-year reunion and Pippa will be Andrew’s girlfriend at a family wedding. Their fake dates take them around South Africa until sparks fly and things don’t feel so fake anymore.
The Book Girls Say…
Reviews praise the way that Pippa’s character helped them step into her mind and have a deeper understanding of one person’s experience with autism, even though the overall book is light and fun.
Author Jo Watson shared some background information about Pippa in a Goodreads review that we wanted to pass on in her own words: “When I set out to write this book, I had no intention of writing a character who was on the autism spectrum. But very early on in the book I received my autism diagnosis. In writing the character of Pippa, I gave her many of my specific traits, but I also added ones that I know to be true of others on the spectrum. We all exist on a very large and diverse spectrum, my experience is very different to other’s experiences of having autism. I can only write from my perspective, so my experience may not necessarily represent yours, but everyone’s experience is just as true and valid.”
NOTE: This book was originally released in South Africa in 2024, the US release date is 3/18/25.

Would Like to Meet
Book Summary
Evie’s career depends on her ability to convince her agency’s biggest client, Ezra Chester, to finally write the romantic comedy screenplay that he owes producers. The only problem is that Ezra finds rom-coms completely unrealistic, and he’ll only agree to write the screenplay if Evie proves it’s possible to meet a man the way it always happens in romantic movies.
Evie is cynical about love herself, but she’ll do anything to keep her job, even if it means reenacting iconic meet-cute scenes in public. She tries everything from spilling orange juice on a stranger to leaving her number in books throughout London. But can a workaholic who’s given up on love really find a meet-cute of her own?
The Book Girls Say…
This novel is all about meet-cutes! If you love classic rom-com movies like Sleepless in Seattle and Notting Hill, this book is for you. You’ll even find many of your favorite flicks mentioned throughout the book.
When in Rome
Book Summary
Amelia, aka Rae Rose, is a pop star feeling totally burnt out by years of maintaining her image for all of her adoring fans. She’s in desperate need of a break and would love to escape to Rome, as Audrey Hepburn does in her favorite film. But since she can’t discreetly get to Rome, Italy, she hops in the car and heads to Rome, Kentucky.
Noah runs his grandmother’s pie shop in Rome, and isn’t impressed when Amelia appears on his front lawn in her broken-down car. He’s the town grump, doesn’t have Wifi or a cell phone, and prioritizes privacy. But when the local B&B turns Amelia away because they don’t have any vacancies, he reluctantly agrees to let Amelia stay in his guest room.
The Book Girls Say…
This rom-com is a loose retelling of the Audrey Hepburn movie Roman Holiday, so it’s a fun treat for fans of the classic movie. It’s also a sweet closed-door book (no graphic sex scenes per reviewers).

Improbable Meet-Cute Collection

As the name of the collection implies, each of these novellas features a meet-cute. The stand-alone stories range from 40-100 pages, making them perfect when you just want a quick, fun read.
The Book Girls Say…

Our favorites, by far, were The Exception to the Rule by Christina Lauren and Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez.

The Book Girls Say…
Some readers find Delphie had to like at first, but her growth throughout the novel is an important part of the story. Melissa enjoyed the story from the first page!

When Weston discovers that the woman from the bar is the interior designer for his dream project on his family’s ranch, he couldn’t be happier. Ada’s reaction is quite the opposite.
The Book Girls Say…
Don’t let the vintage-y book cover fool you. This is part of a contemporary rom com series, and it’s described as a mix of sweet and spicy. Each book is interconnected because the characters all live in the same small town, but this can be read as a standalone.
The One with the Kiss Cam
Book Summary
After watching her mother’s love life implode time and again, Nora has created some pretty strict rules to protect her own heart. The primary rule is a simple one – avoid relationships.
Nora’s friends, however, think that she needs more fun in her life. She reluctantly agrees to a blind date at a Utah Jazz basketball game. The date is terrible, and Nora is counting the minutes until she can go home!
She thinks it couldn’t get any worse, but just when her date steps out to the concession stand, the kiss cam zooms in on her and the stranger sitting on her other side. At least he’s cuter than her current date. To kiss or not to kiss?
When Nora’s life takes a nosedive, it’s the man from the kiss cam who seems bent on proving to her that good men do exist.
The Book Girls Say…
While the other rom-coms on this list have some steamy scenes, this is a clean romance option. It’s described as flirty and fun with a side of swoon and without any religious undertones.

Outrageously in Love
Book Summary
Bookish Harriet realizes that, while she’s lived a million lives between the pages of her favorite novels, her life in New Zealand hasn’t included any adventures of her own. When she’s invited to visit her sister in New York City, she decides it’s the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself as Harriet 2.0 – the bold and outgoing version.
She gets a chance to put her new alter-ego to the test sooner than expected when she inadvertently lands in the lap of a handsome man on the second leg of her transpacific flight. The old Harriet would be embarrassed and apologetic after such a meet-cute, but what would Harriet 2.0 do? Certainly, she’d take advantage of the opportunity, especially since she’ll never see him again.
But then she sees him again… Not only are they unexpectedly reunited in New York, but it turns out he’s totally off-limits! But he gets all of her nerdy references, and Harriet 2.0 wants to do the most outrageous thing of all – take a chance on love.
The Book Girls Say…
This is a very swoony and very steamy rom-com, but it also deals with some serious topics, including panic attacks and self-harm.
This is the third book in the Love in the City series. It can be read as a standalone, but because the characters in each book are interrelated, it does contain spoilers of the earlier books. If you enjoy spicy rom-coms set in New York City, you might want to start at the beginning of the series.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown
Book Summary
Chloe Brown is a wealthy 28-year-old computer geek with chronic pain who resolves to stop being boring – or in her words, to “get a life.” From riding a motorcycle and traveling to having meaningless sex, she has a six-step action plan to become a more exciting person.
Along the way, while attempting to be spontaneous, she meets (or more accurately, “meet cutes”) a tattooed handyman with a rough exterior, but maybe his rebel status isn’t all he has to offer.
The Book Girls Say…
As you might have guessed from Chloe’s list of goals, this is a steamy rom-com, but it’s also charming, sweet, and has more depth than you might expect because it addresses the issue of chronic illness.
If you enjoy this one, there are two more books in the Brown Sisters series, each of which can be read as a standalone.

Unlike most of the books on this list, this one is not a rom-com. This romantic drama includes themes of grief and healing, but there is also humor amid the heartbreak.

The Book Girls Say…
Julia Whelan has long been one of our favorite audiobook narrators, but we were excited to discover that she’s also a very talented author with degrees in English and creative writing from Middlebury College and Oxford University. We both loved her novel, Thank You for Listening, and we’re now eager to read (or listen to) her debut novel, My Oxford Year. If you enjoy audiobooks, give this one a listen – Julia narrates it herself.
Readers describe this book as clever and sassy, but also warn that it will break your heart. It’s perfect for fans of Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

After their awkward meet cute, she finds herself teaming up with another amateur detective to keep Harper safe – but does Harper really need their help at all?
As Annie winds up getting sucked into her neighbor’s drama, she ends up with not one but two new people in her life.
The Book Girls Say…
The meet-cute in this novel doesn’t occur until almost a hundred pages in, but it will have you laughing out loud.
While Annie’s chemistry career is not the focus of this novel, the story comes back to it by the end. When you read it, keep in mind that it was published in February of 2020… it’s quite ironic that the chemistry storyline focusing on hand sanitizer was released just a month before it became such a precious commodity.

The Book Girls Say…
The ratings are lower than we hoped for this book, largely because it also uses the third-act miscommunication trope. But Angela read it and rated it 4 stars as a light rom-com.
This book includes some very steamy scenes, so we recommend skipping this one if you prefer your rom coms on the more tame side.
