Book Summary

For twenty years, Liv has run a successful NYC wedding-planning business with her husband, Eliot. When he dies unexpectedly, Liv is shocked to learn that he’s left his half of the business to his young girlfriend, whom Liv knew nothing about. Much to Liv’s chagrin, perky Savannah shows up on her doorstep, eager to be her partner and protege.

As Liv and Savannah struggle to find a way to work together, they each find new love in unexpected places. In addition to Liv and Savannah, we are introduced to many of the wedding vendors that they work with – the florists, caterers, servers, and musicians. In a Love Actually-style narrative, this book follows each of them as they navigate love and friendship, and we see their lives overlap at weddings throughout the city.

The Book Girls Say…

With five different storylines, we were worried that we’d be left feeling like we didn’t get enough of any of them, but the characters were very well developed and the way that each couple was woven throughout the book left us feeling very satisfied! This book was especially lovely in its representation of a wide range of both straight and LGBTQ+ love stories!

Paradise Problem book cover

Book Summary

Anna and West didn’t have much in common in college. He was a buttoned-up heir to a grocery chain and she was a free-spirited artist. They’re college marriage was a sham to get her access to subsidized family housing at UCLA. She thought their divorce was finalized at graduation.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist while West is a Stanford professor. He has little interest in joining the family business, which he views as a heartless corporation, but he is interested in receiving his inheritance.

When it turns out that a clause in his grandfather’s will requires him to be happily married for five years before receiving one hundred million dollars, Liam thinks his marriage to Anna puts him in the home stretch. But now his family is pressuring him to meet his mysterious spouse. First, Liam worries about how his family will react to paint-splatter, foul-mouthed Anna. Then he begins to worry that introducing her into his toxic world of wealth will corrupt his pure-hearted fake wife.

Another of our favorite Christina Lauren books, The Unhoneymooners, begins with a major wedding catastrophe. The novella sequel, The Honeymoon Crashers (despite the title), actually centers completely around wedding planning.

Wedding Game book cover

Book Summary

Best friends Lexie and Scarlet find themselves attending yet another wedding—perhaps their ninth or tenth of the summer. The final task? Kiss a groomsman.

Lexie anticipates a lighthearted diversion but is caught off guard when she meets not one, but two captivating groomsmen: Chris, a tall, dark, and handsome man departing for New York that very night, and Josh, a charmingly rugged farmer.

Though they’ve just met, Christ impulsively invites Lexie for a weekend away in New York City. As she navigates this unexpected romantic dilemma, Lexie must decide if love is truly in the cards and, if so, with whom.

Paid Bridesmaid book cover

Of course, no one knows they are paid, and it’s crucial to stay undercover to avoid embarrassing the bride. While she has a full staff, Rachel heads to the highest-profile events herself, which is how she ended up at the luxe wedding of an Instagram influencer in Hawaii.

Rachel is serving as the maid-of-honor opposite the groom’s business partner and long-time best friend, Camden. Camden is understandably suspicious of Rachel since he’s never met her before, and he has been burned by people misleading him in the past.

As their interactions increase throughout the week, Rachel is determined to keep him at a distance, but fate continues pulling them closer together, often through near-disaster wedding moments.

Paige begins to enjoy her fake life a bit too much, causing chaos along the way.

The Book Girls Say…

This book includes plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but it also addresses some heavier topics, like mental health. Many readers specifically note enjoying all of the outdoorsy Colorado scenes, and dog lovers will especially love the spotlight role played by Mia’s beloved English bulldog.

Book Summary

As she’s planning her daughter’s wedding, Marcy is also trying to finalize her divorce after a long marriage. She’s been separated long enough to have a new boyfriend pushing for a commitment, and now her ex-husband Harvey wants to get back together too.

Marcy’s too busy with the wedding to deal with her own man problems. It turns out weddings bring out the worst in everyone. And it doesn’t help that her daughter’s new in-laws keep stealing items everywhere they go!

As Marcy realizes that it might be impossible to keep everyone happy, she knows it’s time to make the hard choice between old and new.

The Book Girls Say…

We’ve both read this book and loved the storyline of planning her daughter’s wedding. Some of you are probably familiar with how hectic that can be!

While writing this description, we were shocked to learn that there is another book, Lift and Separate, that covers Marcy’s split from Harvey after he cheats on her with a 21-year-old. Marcy is 56 in that book, so it still fits the 50-something them if you’d like to start with it, but Husbands and Other Sharp Objects reads just as well as a stand-alone.

Book Summary

Rachel is a New Yorker who agrees to spend the summer in Singapore, her boyfriend Nick’s home country while he attends his best friend’s wedding. He just failed to mention one crucial aspect of his life. He is considered Singapore’s most eligible bachelor and the lavish wedding they’ll be attending is billed as the wedding-of-the-century.

Nick’s family is essentially royalty, with younger generations expected to comply with the older generations’ wishes for their life (and spouse) choices. Rachel struggles to fit in with Nick’s family and friends at all the over-the-top events leading up to the wedding.

The Book Girls Say…

This book is rich with descriptions of Singapore’s sights, sounds, and tastes. It gives a very entertaining look at the lifestyle of the 1% from both the inside and outside perspectives. According to Angela’s Singaporean friends, these crazy stories are actually not so far-fetched.

Crazy Rich Asians is the first book in a trilogy written by Singaporean-born Kevin Kwan, and you can pick up the complete box set here.

We both laughed through this whole series and even loved the movie based on the first book. This book/series is an excellent pick if you want something entertaining, but be ready to pay attention because there are a lot of characters!

Reading the trilogy back to back is a great choice, as you won’t have to relearn all the relationships. We also highly recommend the audiobooks, because the accents add to the stories. We enjoyed the second book a little less, but the final book is just as good as the first, so keep going!

Delilah Green Doesn't Care book cover

Book Summary

After a lonely childhood raised with a cold, distant stepfamily, Delilah swore she’d never return to her hometown of Bright Falls, Oregon. But when her estranged stepsister, Astrid, begins pressuring her to return home to photograph her wedding, the guilt trip and the promise of a five-figure payment are more than Delilah can turn down.

Delilah is determined to breeze in and out of town and be back home in New York as soon as possible. But while she’s there, she figures it can’t hurt to have a little fun with Claire, Astrid’s cute bestie.

The idea is less appealing to Claire, who has a lot on her plate. Between running her bookstore and raising her preteen daughter without much help from her ex-husband, Clair prefers to keep life simple and surprise-free whenever possible.

Delilah definitely feels like an unwelcome surprise that could disrupt Claire’s life. Claire would prefer to keep her distance, but as the two are repeatedly thrown together for wedding preparation tasks, Claire begins to find Astrid’s charms harder to resist.

The Book Girls Say…

We featured the second book in this series, Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail, on our list of Stylish Novels Featuring Interior Designers. The characters introduced in this first book do make appearances again in later books, each book can be read as a standalone.

Book Summary

When American Rebecca (Bex) Porter moves to the UK to attend Oxford University, she’s shocked to discover that she’s living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, the future king of England. Living in close quarters allows Bex to get to know the real Nick – the person behind the title.

When their friendship develops into more, Bex is thrust into a ritzy world of society events, exclusive ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace. But the glamour comes with loads of baggage – from intrusive tabloids and ex-girlfriends to long-held royal family secrets.

How much is Bex willing to sacrifice for Nick? Will the pressures of the Crown ultimately come between them?

The Book Girls Say…

If you love getting a looking at the lives of fictional royal families, then we highly recommend the Royal We, and it’s sequel, The Heir Affair.  Angela absolutely loved both books! But the third book in the trilogy has never been published, so keep in mind that this series will leave you hanging.

Many reviewers describe the books as Will and Kate fan fiction, but the authors also seem to have predicted some of the Harry and Meghan drama before it happened.

These books are full of fun and fantasy, but they also dig deeper than many fictional royal reads by addressing heavier topics. Specifying any trigger warnings would spoil the storylines, but go in knowing that it’s not all fluff.

Bridesmaid for Hire book cover

Book Summary

Maggie is enjoying a well-deserved vacation from her wedding planning business. She’s determined to relax and not think about work. But that’s before she hears that the wedding of the century is happening right there in Bora Bora. If only she had an in, this could help her take her business to the next level.

Unfortunately, that ‘in” comes in the form of the absolute last person she wants to bump into on vacation. Brody is her brother’s best friend and her sworn enemy. It turns out his boss’s daughter is the one getting married and he’s in Bora Bora for the wedding in hopes that it will earn him brownie points toward a big promotion.

Maggie and Brody decide to put their hate for each other aside and pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend for the sake of the wedding. What could go wrong?

The Book Girls Say…

While some readers compare this book to the ever-popular Unhoneymooners, others find the characters immature and frustrating.

Many reviewers say that the audiobook, with dual narration by Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon, adds to the hilarity of the situations that Maggie and Brody find themselves in.

In addition to Addie and Dylan, Dylan’s best friend, Addie’s sister, and a random guy from Facebook who needed a ride are crammed into a Mini for the long ride across England.

Along the way, Addie and Dylan are forced to explore the events that tore them apart.

The Book Girls Say…

Beth O’Leary stole our hearts with The Flatshare, her first book, and warmed our hearts again with The Road Trip.

Keep in mind that the wedding itself isn’t as central to the plot of this book as it is in most of the others on this list. Rather, the destination wedding serves as the catalyst for the road trip that brings the characters together.

The book features a “Now and Then” split timeline and is a bit more somber than some of the author’s other books, while still incorporating some humor.
