Book Summary

Struggling novelist and divorced mom of two, Finlay Donovan, is BARELY holding things together. Each day has new challenges, like her ex-husband firing the nanny with no warning right before an important meeting.

Money is running out, and her next novel is way behind schedule. While meeting with her agent and attempting to buy more time, she receives a mysterious envelope with an offer of quick cash in exchange for a job.

Desperation and intrigue lead her to follow up with the number on the note, and before she knows what’s happening, she’s kind of agreed to be a contract killer for a woman with a truly terrible husband. Whoops.

The Book Girls Say…

While the synopsis sounds pretty dramatic, this book is definitely witty and hilarious versus gory or scary. It’s filled with twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages and unable to put it down!

Keep in mind that this isn’t intended to be a realistic crime book. You have to suspend your disbelief at points and just enjoy the ride. It’s perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series.

Books with Characters In Their 30s

Book Summary

Margaret Ives is the daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th century, but the former tabloid princess hasn’t been seen in years. Now in her 80s, this tragic heiress is ready to tell her story. She invites two authors to Little Crescent Island for a one-month trial period, after which she intends to choose one to write her memoir.

The two authors she has invited couldn’t be more different. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-Prize winner with the personality of a thundercloud. Alice Scott, on the other hand, is an eternal optimist who is still working toward her big break as a writer.

Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story, but because of their ironclad NDAs, Hayden and Alice can’t share what they’ve learned in order to put together a more complete picture. Whether her story is a mystery, a tragedy, or a love ballad is yet to be determined. The same can be said for the story between Alice and Hayden, who can’t deny the inconvenient pull between them each time they’re in the same room.

The Book Girls Say…

We’ve always loved that Henry’s romance novels are more than just that, but the consensus seems to be that Henry has entered new writing territory with this novel. Early readers say that this book’s writing style is classic Emily Henry, but it’s even heavier on the plot and lighter on the romance (with many comparing it to the work of Taylor Jenkins Reid).

Book Summary

Writers & Lovers is a classic coming-of-age book about the struggle of a 31-year-old drowning in debt in 1997. She works as a waitress to pay the bills while trying not to give up her bigger dream of writing a novel. Her commitment to writing was one of our favorite aspects of the story.

We thought it was the perfect mix of literary fiction and reality TV as the book follows the main character through every aspect of her daily life.

The Book Girls Say…

After initially reading so many reviews from people who found this book boring, we went in skeptical, but we both fell in love with Writers and Lovers. And our readers who chose it for the In Case You Missed It Challenge enjoyed it as well. We specifically recommend this book for fans of the movie Reality Bites!

But in 1927, when Clara was just 8 years old, her mother went missing off the coast of South Carolina. Not only did this leave her daughter and husband brokenhearted, but it also dashed the hopes of ever translating the sequel to her book.

Years later, in 1952, Clara is an illustrator raising a daughter of her own. Out of the blue, she is contacted by a stranger in London named Charlie Jameson who claims to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical but can’t help but be intrigued.

Together with her daughter, Wynnie, Clara crosses the Atlantic. When they arrive, London is experiencing a deadly natural disaster—the Great Smog. It’s too much for young Wynnie’s asthma, so Charlie invites them to seek refuge at his family’s retreat in the Lake District. There, Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind.

Broken Country book cover

Book Summary

After a teenage heartbreak, Beth marries a kind, gentle farmer named Frank, and they build a beautiful life together. Years later, Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog that is attacking sheep on the farm, and then they learn that the dog belonged to Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager, who has just returned to town. From that moment forward, nothing will ever be the same again.

Gabriel, now a famous author, has returned to his hometown with his young son. A son who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

As Beth is pulled back into Gabriel’s orbit, the past is no longer in the past. Secrets and jealousies resurface and tensions rise throughout the village. Beth will have to decide between the life she has and the life she once wanted.

The Book Girls Say…

Early in the novel, we learn that both Beth and Gabriel were aspiring writers during their teen years. For Gabriel, that dream has since become reality. Although his writing career is not the central theme of the novel, it does play an important role throughout the book.

Angela picked this book up without even reading the synopsis based on early recommendations from friends, and she was immediately captivated. Told in short chapters that alternate between the “before” of 1955 and the “present” of 1968, this heartbreaking and layered novel strikes a balance between drama, mystery, and romance. It’s a perfect book club pick because you’ll definitely want someone to discuss it with!

Queens of Crime book cover

Book Summary

In 1930, five of the greatest female crime writers of the era came together to form a secret society. Tired of being treated as second-class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club, these women call themselves the Queens of Crime, and they are determined to solve an actual murder reminiscent of the locked-room murders they are famous for writing about.

Led by Dorothy L. Sayers (whose husband is a member of the Detection Club), the Queen of Crime also includes Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham, and Baroness Emma Orczy.

May Daniels, an English nurse, was visiting France with her friend when she seemingly vanished from a train station. Her body was discovered in the nearby woods months later. The police believe she was strangled, but how did the killer manage to sneak her body out of the crowded station without anyone noticing, and why was there so much blood at the crime scene?

The Queens of Crime take it upon themselves to solve this highly publicized murder, but it seems that the killer is targeting Sayers and threatening to expose a dark secret from her past.

The Book Girls Say…

While the Queens of Crime secret society is fictional, this book featuring well-known real-life authors was inspired by a true story in the life of Dorothy Sayers.

Marie Benedict has co-authored two of our favorite books from recent years (The Personal Librarian and The First Ladies), as well as many other highly-rated books about fascinating real women in history.

What Does it Feel Like book cover

Book Summary

Eve feels like the luckiest woman in the world. She has her dream career as a successful novelist and a happy family, including an amazing husband who made it possible for her to have both a career and children.

But then, in a day, everything changes. She wakes up in the hospital, unsure why she is there. Her doctors and husband remind her that she had a brain tumor and just had a major surgery to remove it. She’s gone from relying on her words and stories for her career to not even remembering the words to Christmas carols. Will she even remember her children? And how will she be able to return to her beloved writing career?

The Book Girls Say…

This is a novella-length autobiographical story of the author Madeleine Wickham’s (pen name Sophie Kinsella) real experience being diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer, in late 2022. She talks about why she opted to make this a novel instead of a memoir in the Author’s Notes at the end, so don’t miss that after you read.

Melissa first read Sophie Kinsella’s bestselling Confessions of a Shopaholic in the early 2000s when it was released. She laughed her way through Becky’s adventures and loved living vicariously in London through the book series. While this was an emotional read, Melissa loved seeing the author’s wit, good nature, and positive outlook shine through.

Genius of Judy book cover

Book Summary

If Judy Blume is one of the authors who first sparked your love of reading, then you’ll want to pick up this biography, which provides an intimate portrait of her life, her work, and her cultural impact.

It begins in the 1960s, when Judy, a mother of two living in suburban New Jersey, was searching for more purpose in her life. She began writing books that starred regular children with genuine thoughts and problems. But more than that, she used her deceptively simple tales to provide honest exploration of the growing women’s rights movement and address issues like career opportunities, bodily autonomy, and even sexual pleasure.

Blume’s bravery provoked backlash, making her the country’s most-banned author in the mid-1980s. Thankfully, her works withstood those culture wars, and she remains a beloved author among readers of all ages. Now, this biography tells the story of how she went from housewife to a groundbreaking icon.

Their constant classroom clashes prompt their professor to offer an ultimatum. If they want to stay in her class, they’ll have to co-author a manuscript that merges their opposing genres. The boundary between fiction and reality blurs as their work-in-progress provides an outlet for them to express their feelings of attraction.

When Rosie and Aiden again find themselves competing for a coveted career opportunity, their rivalry is reignited and threatens to unravel both their partnership and burgeoning romance.

The Book Girls Say…

This enemies-to-lovers novel set in the literary world is described as Beach Read meets The Hating Game.

This is Katie Holt’s debut novel. Readers especially love how she infused it with her Peruvian and Tennesseean heritage.

Lowen intends to keep her discovery of the autobiography manuscript secret in order to protect Jeremy. But as their relationship grows more complicated, she begins to reconsider. If Jeremy read Verity’s horrifying truths, could he continue to love his wife? And if not, would that make room for Lowen?

The Book Girls Say…

If you only like books with likable characters, then this may not be the title for you. By the end, you may not like any of them.

While many consider Colleen Hoover to be a YA author, this book is squarely an adult read because of numerous explicit scenes.

Book Summary

Marilyn wasn’t just caught making out with the rabbi’s son—she was caught by the whole congregation! In hopes of saving their daughter’s reputation, her parents sent her to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. They gave her an ultimatum: spend the summer with Ada, the strict, premier matchmaker, or kiss her college plans goodbye.

Based on her mother’s description, Marilyn expects Ada to be a humorless septuagenarian. Instead, Ada is sharp and straight-talking, with platinum blonde hair, a Hermès scarf, and a Cadillac convertible.

Ada and Marilyn set off for Avalon on the Jersey Shore, where Marilyn helps to scope out eligible matches for anyone but herself. She’s learning a lot from Ada—but not exactly what her parents were hoping for. Marilyn realizes that she doesn’t have to settle, even as her father threatens to disinherit her.

The Book Girls Say…

Marilyn’s dream of attending college is fueled by her desire to become an author. Her father does not understand her modern ideals and would much rather see her become a housewife, as was expected of most girls at the time. Her passion for writing is a big plot point throughout the book.

We love summertime historical fiction, so we were very excited when our readers voted this one of the Best Beach Reads of All Time. Melissa read it based on those recommendations and liked it so much that she immediately started working through every Sara Goodman Confino book.

Rom-commers book cover.

Book Summary

Emma has spent her life as an aspiring (and talented) screenwriter, but a past family tragedy keeps her in Texas as a full-time caregiver. However, when the opportunity of a lifetime is presented, it may finally be her chance to pursue the career of her dreams.

Emma’s screenwriting idol, Charlie Yates, has written his first romance script – and it’s terrible. His agent wants to bring in Emma to help with the rewrite, but there are problems. Charlie is cranky, he doesn’t work with co-writers, and he doesn’t believe in love.

Can Emma convince him that romance and love exist? And, can her younger sister handle caring for their dad while she is away?

The Book Girls Say…

Katherine Center always delivers a page-turning mix of humor, emotion, and serious chemistry between the characters. You’ll love and hate almost every character at different points because she writes in a way that makes you care about each one. Like the rest of us, they’re flawed humans who don’t always say the right thing.

While this is a rom-com by every definition, this book also includes enough meaty topics to make it a stellar book club pick. The final chapters are especially lovely, with a perspective on grief that is likely to trigger some reflection.

Book Summary

Emilia Bassano had access to English theater in 1581 as Lord Chamberlain’s mistress. However, she wanted to be a playwright, not just an audience member. In 1581, that was not a role society would accept a woman to play. However, her desire to see her work on the stage was strong, so she paid a man for the use of his name. In order for her work to be seen, she had to write herself out of history.

In the present, playwright Melina Green has written a new work inspired by her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. However, four hundred years later, Melina faces some of the same challenges as Emilia. Will she also be willing to forgo credit in order to see her work performed?

The Book Girls Say…

Jodi Picoult always writes compelling stories with plenty of discussion-worthy moments. This would be a good pick if you enjoy history and prefer longer reads (544 pages).

Love in the City book cover

Book Summary

Her plans take an unexpected turn when she meets Michael, her grumpy yet attractive upstairs neighbor and single father. As their paths intertwine, Michael begins featuring in her fantasies. Maybe he’s exactly the inspiration she needs to write a sexy romance novel.

The Book Girls Say…

The characters in Love in the City are entertaining and fundamentally good people with relatable flaws. This is a slow-burn that ultimately ignites into steamy flames. Romance novel perfection!

If you enjoy this book, there are three more in the series, although this is the only one about a writer.

Book Summary

Emma’s parents are both highbrow authors and publishers with their own vanity press. They look down on anything popular, mainstream, or that they deem as not literary enough. The Book Girls Say…

This book is set squarely in the publishing world and offers a great glimpse into the process of creating a book—the good and the bad.

Viola Shipman is the pen name for Wade Rouse, who we’ve come to love for his heartwarming stories and the kindness he exudes in both real life and in his novels. Don’t miss the author’s note in this one!

Misery book cover

Book Summary

Bestselling novelist Paul Sheldon finds himself in a nightmarish situation when he is rescued from a car crash by Annie Wilkes, a reclusive former nurse and his self-proclaimed “number one fan.”

Holding Paul captive in her remote Colorado home, she demands he write a new novel resurrecting Misery, under constant threat of violence if she disapproves of his work.

Trapped and severely injured, Paul is forced to use his wits and storytelling skills not only to appease Annie, but to survive.

The Book Girls Say…

Stephen King frequently features writers as protagonists or central characters in his novels. If horror is not your preferred genre, consider his 2021 work of crime fiction, Billy Summers. In this book, Billy is a former Marine sniper and Iraq war vet turned hitman who only kills “bad people.” He’s taking one last job before retiring that requires him to go undercover as a writer named David Lockridge. Under his assumed author name, he rents office space in the small town of Red Buff. The story alternates between Billy’s real life and the fictional memoir that he is penning, which tells his backstory.

You: The Story: A Writer's Guide to Craft Through Memory book cover

Book Summary

Known for her best-selling young adult historical fiction featuring vivid characters and harrowing plots, Ruta Sepetys is considered an expert in her craft. In this book, which is part memoir and part how-to guide, she encourages aspiring writers to look inward and use their own personal experiences and memories to discover their unique voice.

This book weaves together heartfelt stories from her own life that illustrate an aspect of the craft of writing (such as plot, character development, or dialogue) and provides a series of writing prompts and exercises.

The Book Girls Say…

Reviewers say this book is a great choice, even for those who aren’t interested in becoming writers themselves. Whether you are interested in writing or simply interested in the process that writers go through, we think you’ll enjoy this non-fiction option.

For another memoir on the craft of writing, consider Stephen King’s On Writing. Published in 2000, a year after he survived a near-fatal accident, this book is described as part memoir and part master class on writing.
