Liane Moriarty Movie & TV Series Adaptations

Apples Never Fall – This limited series is now streaming on Peacock with a cast including Annette Bening. Angela and her husband both enjoyed the TV adaptation, though they watched it several years after reading the book, so they didn’t find themselves comparing the details too closely. Keep in mind that the series is set in Florida, rather than in Australia, like the book.

Big Little Lies – There are currently two seasons of Big Little Lies on HBO Max, with a third season reported to be in the works as of the fall of 2025. The series has an all-star cast, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz. Keep in mind that the series is set in Monterey, California, rather than in Australia, like the book.

The HBO adaptation of Big Little Lies premiered in 2017, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. While it was originally billed as a one-season limited series, there are currently two seasons (14 episodes), and a third season was announced in the fall of 2025, which is reportedly in the works.

Season 1 of the show keeps the novel’s central murder mystery and core group of women but relocates the story from Australia to Monterey, California. It also makes notable changes to certain subplots and the ending while preserving the overall arc.

Season 2 is original material that continues the lives of the main characters after the events of the novel’s climax, adding new conflicts and backstories.

Although Liane Moriarty has not yet officially announced that she’ll be releasing a new book in 2026, some sources are reporting that she’ll be publishing a sequel to Big Little Lies, which could provide the source material for the third season of the series.

Nine Perfect Strangers – This thriller also stars Nicole Kidman and is streaming on Hulu & Disney Plus. The first two seasons are available now, with no word yet on whether it will be renewed for a third season. This adaptation has received mixed reviews, with many people praising the casting but criticizing that the pacing is too slow and the overall story development is underwhelming.


Other Potential Adaptations

The Husband’s Secret – Sony Pictures is said to be developing this book into a movie directed by Kat Coiro. No release date is currently available.

Truly Madly Guilty – Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are attached to an HBO adaptation of Truly Madly Guilty. As of 2019, Nicole Kidman reported that it was in the works, and more recent media coverage still describes the project as “in development,” but there are no specific details available.

What Alice Forgot – This book was optioned to become a feature film in 2014, with Jennifer Aniston said to play Alice, but there has been no recent news on this adaptation.

The Hypnotist Love Story – In 2019, Heather Graham starred in a pilot episode of The Hypnotist Love Story for ABC, but the series was not picked up for a full season.

Liane Moriarty is an Australian author who started writing as a child. Her father commissioned her first novel for $1, which turned into a three-volume epic called ‘The Mystery of Dead Man’s Island.’ However, her path to being a best-selling author wasn’t straight. After getting a business degree, she worked in advertising and marketing and started The Little Ad Agency.

While working as a freelance copywriter, she also wrote short stories in her free time, but didn’t ever expect to have her own novel until her younger sister had a YA novel published. This inspired Liane to enroll in a Masters program in Sydney, and through that program, she wrote Three Wishes. The book went on to be published around the world.

Her fifth novel, The Husband’s Secret, was her first NY Times #1 Bestseller. This helped her sixth novel, Big Little Lies, debut in the #1 spot, making Liane Moriarty the first Australian author to debut in the top spot in the US.

Moriarty has sold over 20 million copies of her books worldwide, and her novels have been translated into forty languages. Most of her books have now been adapted for the screen, often with the involvement of fellow Australian Nicole Kidman.
