A Few Things Tennessee is Known For

Tennessee earned its nickname – “The Volunteer State” – during the War of 1812 when many Tennesseans stepped up to help with the war efforts. In 1861, Tennessee was the last state to leave the Union and join the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out, although “East Tennessee” (the eastern ⅓ of the state) remained a Unionist stronghold. Tennessee was also the first state readmitted to the Union after the war. A half-century later, Tennessee became the final state to ratify the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.

Bordered by Blue Ridge segments of the Appalachian Mountains on the east and the Mississippi on the west, Tennessee is filled with beautiful scenery. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is America’s most visited national park, with more than 13 million visitors in 2023 alone (nearly three times as many visitors as either Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon).

Of course, you can’t think of Tennessee without thinking of its famous music scene – from the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to the blues clubs of Beale Street in Memphis. Nashville alone accounts for more music industry jobs than any other US city. More than 600,000 people visit Elvis’ Graceland in Memphis annually (making it the second most visited private residence in the US, second only to the White House). And each year, nearly 3 million guests visit Dollywood, nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains (making it the biggest ticketed tourist attraction in Tennessee).

Book Summary

This book is based on the true story of Georgia Tann’s “adoption” agency that claimed to help orphans but instead kidnapped poor children and trafficked them to wealthy families.

Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings have a wonderful life on the Mississippi River aboard their family’s shanty boat. But on a stormy night when their father has to take their mother to the hospital, Rill is left in charge. They are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents – but quickly realize the dark truth.

In present-day South Carolina, Avery Stafford returns home to help her father during a health crisis. When she stumbles upon the possibility that her grandmother may be harboring a dark family secret, Avery becomes obsessed with her mission to uncover the truth.

Book Summary

Lillian and Madison were boarding school roommates and friends from very different backgrounds. However, they’ve barely spoken since a scandal forced Lillian to leave school.

A decade later, Lillian’s life is not on the track she’d imagined for herself, so when she receives a call from Madison asking her to help care for Madison’s twin step-children who are moving in, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose.

But there is a catch: both kids spontaneously burst into flames when they are agitated. Madison needs to keep this fact somehow a secret while her husband runs for public office. Despite knowing nothing about raising kids, Lillian agrees to take on the role, and throughout one summer, she and the kids learn together how to keep their cool – literally. It may even prove to be the start of a whole new life for Lillian.

The Book Girls Say…

We were both very skeptical about the premise of this book, but it’s an excellent and worthwhile short read! While the concept of children who catch fire makes it sound like this book is HEAVY on magical realism, it’s actually the only unusual element and serves as a great metaphor throughout the novel.

Some of our readers did not enjoy that there is adult language in the book, so if you never enjoy books with curse words, skip this one.

With his marriage in major league trouble, Gavin finds help in an unlikely place. He’s invited to join a secret book club made up of some of Nashville’s top A-list alpha males. Taking inspiration from the plot of their latest romance read, the guys coach him through his rocky relationship.

The Book Girls Say…

We both really liked the male point of view in this humorous and steamy book. It was a refreshing twist from the normal rom-com plot that it’s the husband fighting for the marriage.

Book Summary

This novel spans over seventy years while tracing three generations of a Southern Black family.

In the summer of 1995, 10-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister escaped her father’s explosive temper by fleeing to her mother’s hometown of Memphis. Here, half a century earlier, Joan’s grandfather built a majestic house in the historic Black neighborhood of Douglass. He was then lynched just days after becoming the city’s first Black detective.

As she gets older, Joan finds comfort in art and begins painting portraits of the community in Memphis. One of her subjects is their mysterious neighbor, Miss Dawn, who holds secrets to the past. Her stories will help Joan discover how her passion, imagination, and relentless hope are part of a long family tradition. With a paintbrush in her hand, Joan comes to understand that her mother, her grandmother, and the women before them made impossible choices to allow her more choices of her own.

The Book Girls Say…

Reviewers say that the city of Memphis is described in such detail that it becomes a character in the novel. Told in a non-linear timeline, this story blends real historical events into the fictional narrative. It’s described as heartbreaking and engrossing.

The False Flat book cover

Book Summary

Thirty-two-year-old Penelope has had enough of her overbearing mother, her married boyfriend, and her sexist boss. Her life needs a reset, so Pen picks up and moves from Minnesota to Tennessee to open her own financial business.

Once in Nashville, Pen meets brother and sister, Deanna and Grant. Despite the siblings’ best efforts, socially-anxious Pen is reluctant to come out of her shell. She slowly opens up to a friendship with Deanna and after joining Grant’s cycling group, it’s clear that something is blossoming between the two of them. But Pen is determined to ignore her feelings for Grant.

The Book Girls Say…

The title of this book is a metaphor for Pen’s life. In the cycling world, a “false flat” refers to a road that appears delightfully flat and straightforward but is actually a consistent low-grade climb that wears a rider out.

Early readers praise the character development and say this not your typical light romance. This book also includes themes of anxiety and trauma as well as found family.

Book Summary

This novel examines the uneasy relationship between the National Park Service and the people whose land was used to create Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In 1931, Rosie’s Smoky Mountain home was in the path of the Tennessee Great Smokies Park Commission as they set out to create a new national park. Rosie insists she’ll never give up her land, and a compromise offers her and her disabled sister the opportunity to stay for her lifetime. She forms a bond with an ornithologist who is conducting a bird survey for the park, but this friendship only deepens the rift between her and the other mountain folk who are suspicious of government connections.

Eighty-five years later, Kieran heads back to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in search of answers about her great-grandmother’s mysterious death. She meets a park historian named Zach, who may be the key to finding answers and a precious family heirloom. But when Kieran clashes with government regulations, will Zach block her from solving this family mystery?

The Book Girls Say…

Author Karen Barnett spent several years working as a park ranger and naturalist before becoming a professional writer. She has also written a series of historical romances set in the national parks in the 1920s and 1930s called the Vintage National Parks Novels. Barnett is a Christian Fiction author, and this novel includes religious themes, particularly later in this novel.

Book Summary

Dellarobia had dreams of college, but she gave that up to marry Cub when she accidentally got pregnant at 17. After a difficult decade in an unhappy marriage on their failing Tennessee farm, she begins flirting with a younger man. One day, while hiking up a rural mountain road in Appalachia to meet this man, she spots what appears to be a lake of fire in the forested valley below. She soon learns that what she saw are actually millions of Monarch butterflies covering the trees. But why are these butterflies so far off course from their normal winter home in Mexico? Soon, scientists, religious leaders, tourists, and the media descend on the town, each offering their own explanations.

This book strikes a nice balance between storytelling, science, and sociology – all with wonderful character development. While the specific biological event described in the book is fictional, Kingsolver says, in her author’s note, that “the rest of the biological story…is unfortunately true.”

Book Summary

Say Nashville, and most people immediately think of the city’s music scene. In this novel, one of country music’s superstars joins with one of the best storytellers to create a thriller about a young singer/songwriter searching for a future in Nashville that will allow her to outrun her past.

The audiobook recording of this novel features a full cast, including one part narrated by Dolly Parton herself. Reviewers say this book is perfect for fans of the Nashville TV drama series.

The Book Girls Say…

If you’re interested in reading another book about the country music scene, consider The Farewell Tour by Stephanie Clifford, but keep in mind that this novel has a much slower pace. This dual-timeline historical fiction takes place in the 1930s to the 1980s and is set in both Nashville, Tennessee, and Washington state. You’ll meet country star Lillian on her farewell tour in 1980, and you’ll look back at her early rise to fame. Lillian left her farm in Washington State at age 10 and endured the Great Depression and WW2 before being a part of the rise of the Nashville country music scene. It wasn’t an easy road making a career in a male-dominated world, and she was forced to make many hard choices along the way.

Book Summary

In 1920, after a seven-decade crusade for the right of women to vote, thirty-five states had ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, twelve had rejected or refused to vote, and one last state, Tennessee, was needed.

The suffragists face vicious opposition from politicians, clergy, corporations, racists who don’t want black women to vote, and even the “Antis” – women who oppose enfranchisement, fearing the nation’s moral collapse.

The Book Girls Say…

Following a handful of remarkable women who led the charge, this is the non-fiction history of how America’s women won their own freedom. In a period when some are yet again challenging voting rights for women, this story is more important than ever.

Girls of Atomic City book cover

Book Summary

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, didn’t even exist before 1942 and didn’t appear on any maps until 1949. The town was created from scratch as one of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities, and at the height of WWII, it was home to 75,000 – many of them young women recruited from small towns throughout the southern US.

All of the women working in Oak Ridge knew that something big was happening, but the penalty for talking about even the most mundane details of their work was eviction, so few of them pieced together the true nature of their work. But when the US dropped the bomb on Hiroshima in 1945, the secret was out – the women of Oak Ridge had been enriching uranium to build the atomic bomb.

Through historical research and interviews with dozens of the surviving women – many of whom still call Oak Ridge home – Denise Kiernan tells the story of the science and the women in a format that makes this the perfect book for fans of Hidden Figures and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The Book Girls Say…

If you’d rather read a historical fiction novel based on the real-life events that unfolded in Oak Ridge, pick up The Atomic City Girls.

Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics book cover

Book Summary

Each of Dolly Parton’s songs tells a story of her real-life experiences, and in this book, she shares those stories behind her lyrics and the journey she was on when she wrote them. This includes her insights about her financially poor upbringing in a house that was rich with love, her long marriage, her faith, and her remarkable career as a country music icon and pop culture legend.

The Book Girls Say…

While we highly recommend listening to Dolly narrate her own memoir because you really can’t beat hearing her stories and listening to her sing the lyrics in her own iconic voice, keep in mind that the format of the audiobook doesn’t follow the printed book exactly. The audio uses an interviewer/interviewee style of narrative, while the text of the book is more concise but contains lots of never-before-seen photos and rare memorabilia from Parton’s personal archives. For this one, we highly recommend getting both formats, and listening to the audio as you follow along in the book.

In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help her write her memoir, but she passed away just a month later before the book could be written. Instead, Riley Keough listened to the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book and set out to document her mother’s life.

This book – told in the voices of both mother and daughter – is filled with stories of Lisa Marie’s childhood at Graceland in Tennessee, the unconditional love she felt from her father, the trauma of his death, her marriage to Michael Jackson, and her lifelong relationship with Danny Keough.

The Book Girls Say…

We highly recommend listening to the audio version of this short memoir, which includes actual recordings from Lisa Marie Presley as well as narration by Julia Roberts.

Book Summary

This is the 5th book in the Bromance Book Club series, which features male leads who are in a romance book club to learn more about women. Each book features a different member of the club, so you can read this as a standalone book.

Country music star Colton misses his relationship with immigration attorney Gretchen. His music has also struggled since the breakup. Gretchen is also down, but it’s because she’s having a hard time seeing all the excess of Christmas when so many of her clients don’t have money for basic needs.

When Gretchen’s estranged family reaches out with an offer that will help her serve her community, she needs Colton’s help. They want him to be the face of their whiskey brand, which he agrees to in exchange for three dates with Gretchen before Christmas. He’s sure if he can remind her how good they are together, she’ll agree to be with him long-term.

The Book Girls Say…

While we haven’t read this book yet, the prior books in the series are hilarious and a bit steamy, so we expect that this will be a spicy Christmas novel.

Love Notes in Reindeer Falls book cover

Book Summary

The night before Caitlin left Reindeer Falls, Tennessee, to attend Harvard University, Shane blindsided her with the news that he loved her. Nonetheless, she left and hasn’t looked back since. Eight years later, Caitlin returns home and is pleasantly surprised to find that Shane has become a pillar in the community. When it comes time to make a choice between rebuilding her life in Boston or staying in Reindeer Falls, Caitlin will have to think about it much harder than she did the first time around.

This book was originally published under the title Love Notes in Christmas Falls, but the new Reindeer Falls version has an updated ending. The second book in the Reindeer Falls series, Merry Little Love Story in Reindeer Falls, can be read as a standalone, but reviewers say it’s more fun to read them back-to-back. Both of these books are clean Christmas romance reads with some swoon-worthy kissing and mild innuendo, but no open-door scenes.

Book Summary

Kyler is a professional hockey player for the Nashville Predators. After suffering an injury, he happily accepts an invitation to stay at his teammate’s cabin for the weekend, where he can rest and recover.

Iris has recently been through a bad breakup and could use some alone time. When her brother offers her a cabin for the weekend, it seems like the perfect place to get away.

Kyler and Iris met at a party last year, and she was not his biggest fan. The last thing they expect is to end up at the cabin together, let alone to get snowed in.

The Book Girls Say…

Told from a dual POV, this forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers novella is filled with witty banter. It’s a quick read (fewer than 200 pages), making it the perfect choice for the busy holiday season.

Hockey romances have a reputation for being spicy, but reviewers say this book is a pretty tame read overall, with just one steamy scene.
