A Fortune of Sand book cover

Book Summary

Marjorie is the youngest daughter of a wealthy and powerful automotive dynasty in 1927 Detroit. But, she’s never fit in. Her father and siblings dismiss her artistic, offbeat personality, and she dreams of a chance to be herself outside of the controlling family.

She sees a way out through an exclusive arts program funded by an elusive benefactor. The program is set in a beautiful building with talented participants, but something doesn’t feel quite right.

The program is restrictive, with locked doors and whispers that women have disappeared. Instead of Marjorie finding a stronger sense of self, that seems to be slipping away…along with her grip on the truth.

Consider This Before Reading

With the classification of this novel being Adult versus YA, be prepared for it to read a bit differently than the YA Historical Fiction we’re used to. One reviewer noted that it’s most similar to Out of the Easy in that it really puts you in a time and place (1920s Detroit), versus exploring a pivotal moment in history like her Baltic/European set novels.

Some reviewers also say the beginning moves more slowly and it took them longer than expected to get into the story.

Don’t miss the author’s note that highlights which aspects of the storyline are based on real Detroit history.

Can he help them crack the Nazi Enigma cipher? And are the riddles of the Enigma related to their mother’s disappearance?

Thoughts on This Book

The Bletchley Riddle is a co-authored novel with popular middle-grade non-fiction author Steve Sheinkin.

It’s written at an easier reading level than other Ruta Sepetys books, but it is still 392 pages and has been enjoyed by many adult readers, including Melissa’s husband. Her 12-year-old nephew also read and enjoyed it, so it would be a great one to co-read with any middle-schoolers in your life.

Our Thoughts on This Book

Ruta Sepetys has a gift for telling untold stories in compelling, relatable ways, and this book was no exception! We were enthralled with what we had missed happening in the world while we were growing up in the late 1980s. It immediately earned a place on our list of our favorite books of 2022.

While this novel is classified as YA, the characters and subject matter are very well-researched, making it very enjoyable for adult readers.

Book Summary

This young adult historical fiction focuses on life in post-war Spain under Franco’s dictatorship. In 1957, the regime needed money and opened the country to Americans hoping for investment.

That year, eighteen-year-old Daniel travels with his oil tycoon father from Houston to Madrid. Daniel brings his camera, eager to explore the city beyond the image that Franco is projecting to the world. Along with Ana, the young hotel maid tasked with assisting his family, Daniel discovers and documents the atrocities happening in the fascist regime.

Thoughts on This Book

Angela, Melissa, and Melissa’s husband all rated it 5 stars. The beginning of the first chapter has a heavier and more literary feel than the remainder of the book, so keep going if you find the beginning odd. 🙂

Book Summary

When you think of maritime disasters, the Titanic is probably the first that comes to mind. But the deadliest disaster at sea occurred in 1945 when a Soviet submarine sank the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German cruise liner, in the Baltic Sea.

As WWII drew to a close and the Red Army advanced on Germany, a massive evacuation effort began to ferry civilians, soldiers, and equipment to safety. The Wilhelm Gustloff, which had a capacity of 1,800, was packed with more than 10,500 passengers. More than 9,000 people lost their lives when the ship sank, including 5,000 infants and children.

This historical fiction YA novel tells the stories of four passengers: 21-year-old Joana, who is fleeing her native country of Lithuania; Florian, an artist from East Prussia; 15-year-old Emilia from Poland, who is pregnant; and Alfred, a pompous 17-year-old German soldier.

When tragedy strikes, each of them, regardless of country, culture, or status, must fight for their survival.

Book Summary

Despite her rough start to life as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, 17-year-old Josie has big dreams of escaping New Orleans to attend an elite university. However, her careful plans are turned upside down after a mysterious death in the French Quarter. She becomes tangled in the investigation, which will test her conscience, allegiance to her mother, and the madam of Conti Street.

What to Expect in This Book

Like the author’s other historical fiction, you’ll find a strong female character trying to make the best of a difficult situation, along with a great supporting cast. That said, this novel has a different feel than some of the others on the list, as it does transport you to 1950s New Orleans, but isn’t focused on a specific historical event.

Under Stalin’s orders, they are sent to a work camp under the cruelest and coldest conditions. Just getting to the camp requires crossing the Arctic Circle, but somehow, Lina finds comfort in her drawings. She depicts the scenes she witnesses daily in hopes that they’ll provide proof of all they are forced to endure.

Thoughts On This Book

Ruta Sepetys was inspired to write this novel after learning that while her father immigrated to the United States, some of his family was sent to Siberia.

This novel deals with the very grim realities of a Gulag and will introduce you to a side of WWII that you’ve probably learned little about. Some readers didn’t enjoy the audio version of this book as much as the printed version.

Alternate Title & Movie Adaptation

In some countries, you’ll find this book under the alternate title Ashes in the Snow. It was also turned into a movie titled Ashes in the Snow.
