A Few Things Indiana is Known For…

Following the Revolutionary War, a region known as the Indiana Territory became part of the United States. This region included present-day Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Indiana later achieved statehood in 1816 as the 19th state.

After the Civil War, Indiana grew quickly with new industries and people. Gary became a steel hub, while South Bend thrived with Studebaker cars. Even so, central Indiana—nicknamed the Corn Belt—has always stayed true to its farming roots.

Indiana’s geography is diverse. Up north, it borders Lake Michigan and is home to South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. The state’s center is flat farmland, with Indianapolis at its heart as a major crossroads. Down south, the land turns hilly near the Hoosier National Forest and the Ohio River Valley. Here, Evansville serves as the cultural and commercial hub of the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky tri-state area.

Indiana has a deep-rooted love for basketball, known as the “Hoosier Hysteria.” The state is renowned for its high school basketball tournaments, which have produced many notable college and NBA players. Indiana is also famously home to the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. First held in 1911, the Indy 500 is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the world of motorsport.

When We Were Enemies book cover

Book Summary

Elise grew up with women who loved the spotlight. Her mother is an award-winning actress, and her late-grandmother, Vivian, was a 1940s Hollywood icon. Elise, on the other hand, prefers her privacy. But when her upcoming wedding coincides with a documentary being made about her grandmother, it seems she won’t be able to avoid the cameras. She’s convinced to hold the wedding in Edinburgh, Indiana, at the same church where Vivian was married.

Vivian grew up in Edinburgh with a strict Italian father. Aiming to aid in the home front WWII effort, she took a job in 1943 working as a translator at an Italian POW camp in south-central Indiana. She also sang at the local USO club, entertaining the troops. There she fell in love with a handsome soldier.

Upon arriving in her grandmother’s hometown, Elise begins learning more about her grandmother’s past. She is shocked to discover things about Vivian’s pre-Hollywood life that also threaten to unravel her own.

The Book Girls Say…

We’ve read many historical fiction novels about WWII, but this novel shares an entirely new perspective. We had no idea that Indiana was home to a POW camp. We researched the history behind this novel and learned that Camp Atterbury housed thousands of Italian and German POWs from 1943 to 1946.

Emily Bleeker also authored When We Chased the Light, which examines Vivian’s life during WWII from another perspective. While these two books are not listed as part of a series, and can be read independently, readers highly recommend reading When We Were Enemies before When We Chased the Light.

Eventually, she finds home in the community of Hillisburg. As Zorrie ages, you’ll see many events of the 20th century through the eyes of a woman in a small midwestern town.

The Book Girls Say…

The style of this National Book Award finalist is very poetic with beautiful prose. It’s slow-moving, emphasizing the characters and writing, which means you won’t get much action or a quick plot. But if you love quiet books that meander through a character’s normal life through the years, we think you’ll enjoy it.

A Dark and Stormy Murder book cover

Book Summary

Since she was a teen, aspiring author Lena London’s favorite author has been Camilla Graham. When Lena gets a chance to work as Camilla’s assistant, she jumps at it and packs up to move to Blue Lake the next day.

The Book Girls Say…

Readers enjoy the gothic vibe throughout the book, but be aware that only one of the murders is solved in Book 1, while the final chapters serve as a setup for Book 2. This makes it perfect for those who are ready to dive into a new series.

Book Summary

In the 1920s, the Klan’s rise seemed unstoppable, especially in Indiana. A charismatic con man named D.C. Stephenson led the way, despite the constantly changing facts when he recounted his life story. He brought the message of the KKK out of the shadows and into the mainstream as he worked to spread hatred of Blacks, Jews, Catholics, and immigrants in equal measure across the state.

His message of hate was endorsed from the pulpits of local churches, spread at family picnics, and cheered on during town celebrations. Judges, prosecutors, ministers, governors, and senators nationwide proudly proclaimed their membership.

Then, in 1925, his cruel nature was exposed in a new way. Madge Oberholtzer was kidnapped, raped, and mutilated by Stephenson. She suffered for twenty-nine days before succumbing to her injuries. However, she boldly left behind a testimony that resulted in the arrest and conviction of Stephenson. Her deathbed testimony brought down the KKK’s Grand Dragon of Indiana and helped change the course of Indiana & American History.

The Book Girls Say…

This book receives incredibly high and consistent ratings for its compellingly factual but novelistic recounting of this shocking period of history.

Somebody's Daughter book cover

Book Summary

Author Ashley Ford grew up idolizing her father. She believed he was the only one who could understand her, and that they were both artists with sensitive souls. She is sure they will be reunited one day, with the major barrier being that he’s in prison, and she doesn’t know what he did to end up there.

This memoir goes back to her coming of age, as she suffered through growing up black in Indiana amid poverty, a difficult relationship with her mother, and her changing body that began attracting the attention of men. As she strives to find unconditional love, she dates a boy her mother hates. When she begins to see that her mom is right this time and ends the relationship, he rapes her. After that, she finally finds out why her father is in prison. And that’s where the story really begins.

The Book Girls Say…

The bestselling memoir covers the author’s childhood through college years in different cities across Indiana, but it’s not as much about her father as you might expect. There’s more focus on her relationship with her mother and her grandmother.

Readers say this book is especially enjoyable in audiobook form, winning an Audie Award for Best Autobiography/Memoir in 2022.

The Book Girls Say…

Book Summary

Did you know that the now-classic 1983 movie A Christmas Story was based on a series of short stories? This 144-page book contains the autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film.

Whether your favorite scenes include the Ovaltine decoder ring, the leg lamp prize, or Ralphie’s obsession with the Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle, you’re sure to chuckle while reading this book.

The Book Girls Say…

We can’t think of a more fun book pick to end the year than this quick Christmas read! Because it’s formatted as a series of short stories, it’s especially easy to fit into this busy holiday season.

Book Summary

Saira has had a successful career as a romance writer, but she’s been in a recent slump, with her last three books failing to meet expectations. Her publisher has decided to put her current work-in-progress on hold and instead wants her to write a holiday book – Saira’s least favorite kind of romance novel.

Determined to save her career, Saira decides to pack her bags and head to Santa Claus, Indiana, in search of the holiday spirit she’ll need to complete this writing assignment. She arranges to rent a property for her stay, but doesn’t expect the rental manager to be a handsome volunteer firefighter and football coach.

The Book Girls Say…

We love books about books, so a book about a reluctant holiday romance writer was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season!

This holiday romance is a mix of cozy and very steamy! In addition to some detailed open-door scenes, this book also includes quite a bit of adult language, so skip this one if that’s not your thing.

Also, keep in mind that Dorian, the male lead, is dealing with the loss of his wife. His grief plays an important role throughout the novel, which we know could be triggering for readers who have lost a spouse or a loved one (this is revealed very early on in the novel – no spoilers, we promise).
