A Few Things Louisiana is Known For…

Before Spanish and French explorers arrived, Louisiana was home to the Chitimacha, Coushatta, Choctaw, and Tunica. In the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the US doubled in size by acquiring a large part of North America from France. Louisiana became a state in 1812 and seceded from the Union in 1861 to join the Confederacy.

French influence remains palpable. Cajuns are descendants of the Acadian French, who were exiled from Acadia (present-day Canada) and settled in Louisiana, primarily in rural areas. Creoles are a mix of French, Spanish, African, and Native American heritage, with a strong presence in New Orleans.  Louisiana’s cuisine, renowned for its flavor and diversity, is also heavily French-inspired with signature dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée. Even the legal system in Louisiana is based on the French Napoleonic Code, unlike the common law system followed in other US states.

The state’s largest city, New Orleans, is renowned for its vibrant music scene and cultural events like Mardi Gras. The city’s oldest neighborhood, the French Quarter, showcases its French heritage through its architecture. Baton Rouge, the state capital, has many historic sites and educational institutions, such as Louisiana State University.

Outside the cities, you’ll find the largest area of coastal wetlands in the United States, including swamps, marshes, and bayous. The state’s low-lying topography makes it particularly susceptible to flooding during hurricanes, as seen with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, efforts have been made to improve flood defenses and restore wetlands, but Louisiana remains vulnerable to powerful storms.

Book Summary

During the Civil War, freed slaves placed “Lost Friends” ads in Southern newspapers in hopes of being united with loved ones who had been sold. This historical fiction novel tells the story of three women looking for family in 1875 post-Civil War Louisiana.

Lavinia was set to inherit a wealthy plantation, but now it is destitute. Juneau Jane is her illegitimate Creole half-sister, and Hannie is Lavinia’s former slave. The unlikely trio sets out on a perilous journey, encountering those still fighting a war that ended ten years earlier.

Their story intersects with that of a first-year teacher in 1987 Louisiana. Benedetta (Benny) has taken a job in a poor, rural district to help eliminate her college debt. It seems like the perfect opportunity, but when she arrives, she’s shocked by the level of poverty her students endure. But a hidden book that tells the lives of three women a century ago could change everything.

The Book Girls Say…

Readers love learning about Hollyn’s Tourette’s Syndrome and anxiety disorder and how the author uses them to add depth to the characters without letting either define Hollyn.

Roni Loren was previously most known for steamy erotic romances and her readers are loving the switch to more of a rom com contemporary fiction feel. That said, there are still open door bedroom scenes that are quite graphic – more so than you may expect based on the cover. We’ll let you decide if that info makes you want to pick it up or pass.

Seamstress of New Orleans book cover

Book Summary

When Alice’s husband disappears, she leaves chilly Chicago behind to make a new home for herself in New Orleans. She offers sewing lessons at an orphanage to support herself and the child she’s carrying.

Constance is a young widow whose future is still threatened by Benton, her late husband, who had secret gambling debts. When she meets Alice, she offers her lodging in exchange for Alice’s help creating a gown for the Leap Year ball of Les Mysterieuses, the first all-female krewe of Mardi Gras.

While each woman gets stronger and more independent, darkness lingers. The Black Hand are the gangsters who control Storyville. They aren’t satisfied with Benton’s death and still want his debt paid.

The Book Girls Say…

Most readers enjoy learning about the female-driven Leap Year traditions of Mardi Gras, though some wish that the gown-making aspect was more prominent based on the title. The story is more focused on the missing husbands and uncovering their secrets.

Book Summary

Caught between two of the major events of the early 21st century – the war on terror and Hurricane Katrina, this is the true story of one family trying to survive.

Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun operate a house painting business in New Orleans. As the storm approaches, Kathy evacuates with their young children, but Zeitoun – a Syrian-born American citizen – stays to watch over the business. In the aftermath of the storm, he uses his canoe to rescue many neighbors and animals, until he is arrested by the police and National Guardsmen, who mistake him for a terrorism suspect.

The Book Girls Say…

This is an extremely powerful book that paints a vivid portrait of the impacts of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in the days during and after the storm.

In recent years, Abdulrahman Zeitoun has been arrested for and pleaded guilty to charges of domestic violence against his now ex-wife, which we obviously do not condone! The veracity of David Eggers’s portrayal of Zeitoun during Hurricane Katrina has not been called into question.

Book Summary

The author is an investigative journalist and a physician. This nonfiction book is the culmination of her six years of reporting on Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

As the flood waters rose in New Orleans, the power failed, and the heat climbed inside Memorial Medical Center. Difficult decisions had to be made about which patients to rescue first. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.

This book takes you inside the chaos of the hospital and into the conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing.

While we always tend to think that the book is better, you may also be interested in watching the eight Apple TV+ streaming episodes of this book. Melissa and her husband watched some of the episodes and thought the reenactments felt a bit too much like a fictionalized version of the nonfiction events, but others have rated it highly.

Book Summary

This memoir, set in East New Orleans, covers the author’s family history and her relationships with the house her mother purchased in the 1960s. When the family purchased the home, it was in an up-and-coming new area near a major NASA plant that exuded postwar optimism.

Over the years, the family, home, and neighborhood struggled, including the home being swept away by Hurricane Katrina. However, much had changed before Katrina as well.

This memoir explores class, race, inequality, and life in New Orleans outside the tourist district.
