Book Summary
Sara was the head housekeeper at a posh London hotel in 1884. Based on her background, this is more than she ever expected and the highest station she could rise to in life. But then she meets an American visitor, Theodore Camden. He is building the most luxurious residential building in New York, The Dakota, and invites her to come to manage the property. The job brings her to highs and lows she never could have expected.
Sara’s story is told in conjunction with a 1985 storyline of Bailey Camden, who is returning from rehab and gets the opportunity to start fresh with a job overseeing the renovation of an apartment in The Dakota.
The novel goes back and forth between these perspectives, weaving together a story of love, betrayal, and the quest for success within one of NYC’s most famous residences.
The Book Girls Say…
This novel includes a great mix of both home renovation and interior design details. Throughout the story, Bailey, an interior designer, struggles to balance the owners’ preferences for modernizing the design of the space with the importance of historical preservation.
The Dakota is still standing, and it’s located at the corner of Central Park West and 72nd Street, directly across the street from Central Park. It was once home to John Lennon, who was murdered right outside the building gates in 1980, and it remains home to Yoko Ono. This building, dubbed New York’s most famous apartment building by Architectural Digest, has also been home to many other celebrities over the years.

Fifteen years later, following the sudden death of their father, Kat and Blake discover that he’s left both of them the family beach house in Destin, Florida. This joint inheritance puts the sisters at immediate odds. Blake desperately needs the money (after being demoted from nanny to dog nanny) and wants to sell the house. Social media influencer Kat, on the other hand, desperately wants to hold onto the house because it holds so many happy childhood memories.
The two agree that they’ll spend the summer renovating the run-down beach house, and then Kat will buy Blake out. They immediately begin butting heads when Blake’s renovation plans don’t align with Kat’s artistic vision. As the summer goes on, the two will have to come to terms with their shared past and learn how to become sisters.
The Book Girls Say…
Throughout the book, each sister finds herself drawn into a summer romance (complete with a few steamy scenes), but ultimately, this story is more about sisterhood that may even cause you to shed some tears.

Love on Lexington Avenue
Book Summary
Thirty-five-year-old Claire has been devastated twice over – first when her husband died, and the second time when she found out that her late husband was a liar and a cheat. Determined to rid her home of anything that reminds her of him, Clair decides to redesign her Upper East Side brownstone to make it reflect only her aesthetic.
She hires a gruff and often cantankerous contractor named Scott. Scott has been working primarily on corporate offices and high-end hotels, and he’s looking forward to a residential project for a change of pace. But he’s quick to let her know that he has no patience for the pampered princess type that he assumes her to be.
But soon, Claire and Scott develop a mutual respect that borders on attraction. Scott helps Claire realize that not all men are scumbags. And Scott finds himself dragging his feet on the finishing touches because he’s not quite ready to move on to the next job.
The Book Girls Say…
This book is the second in a rom com trilogy that readers say has a surprising amount of emotional depth. Each book in the series centers on a woman who was cheated by Claire’s ex-husband. If you know you’ll want to read all three, it’s best enjoy them in order, but Love on Lexington Avenue also reads well as a standalone.

The Book Girls Say…
This is a laugh-out-loud rom-com with some steamy scenes, but it also carries a lot of emotional baggage, including the lasting impacts of emotional and verbal abuse from an ex-spouse. True to real life, you’ll experience the full range of emotions while reading this book.

Home Renovation Memoirs
Book Summary
This memoir is described as HGTV meets Downton Abbey. As a child, Hopwood DePree was told that he was named after an ancestor. The original Hopwood left his family’s castle to come to America in the 1700s.
As an adult, Hopwood became a Hollywood actor and producer with little connection to his English roots. One night, after some wine and searching on Ancestry.com, he came across a photograph of a grand, 600-year-old English estate near Manchester called Hopwood Hall. He soon discovered that the 60-room manor on 5,000 acres was indeed his family’s ancestral home. Hopwood family lived in the manor for five centuries, but the last known remaining male heirs were killed in World War I. Since that time, the home had fallen into disrepair.
As the sole surviving family member, DuPree decided to leave his life in LA behind to save Hopwood Hall. Despite lacking any construction skills, he was undeterred by the trees growing in the chimney and the holes in the roof. He affectionately coined the term “Downton Shabby” to describe the state of ruin that the home was in, and he called upon an eclectic group of neighbors to help him save the castle.
While this sounds like the plot of a movie, it’s a true story of one man’s ultimate DIY adventure, and, as avid DIY’ers ourselves, we both look forward to reading it!
Detroit Hustle
Book Summary
After being priced out of their Brooklyn neighborhood, journalist Amy Haimerl and her husband decide to start over in a new city. They moved to Detroit to declare bankruptcy, and they invested their savings in purchasing an abandoned house.
The 1914 Georgian Revival was a once stately home, but by the time the Haimerls bought it, it had no plumbing, heat, or electricity. Fortunately, Amy finds a community of others in the city who, like her, aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
Throughout this memoir, Amy recounts the ups and downs of building a life and rebuilding a home in a city with an uncertain future. From real-estate market scams and C.S. Lewis-loving contractors to neighbors who warn them to get out while they can, Amy talks about both the charms and challenges of turning a house into a home.
