Book Summary

It’s almost Sophia’s 60th birthday, and she is not thrilled with her life in Oxford. After a bad relationship, she decides a month-long trip to Greece is just what she needs to find herself. When she arrives, she finds that her rental comes with loud and gregarious neighbors. But they aren’t rambunctious kids – it’s The Old Ducks’ Club, a group of 60-something friends who live life to the fullest.

The spunky Ducks draw Sophia in despite her wishes for a quiet vacation. And once they remind her how to enjoy life, she starts looking at her handsome Greek neighbor through different eyes. While her lousy relationship and Greek relationship are covered, the book is more a story of friendship and Sophia’s transformation than a typical romance.

Thoughts on This Book

Many reviewers of this book shared that they are also 60-something and found the characters in this uplifting read relatable and entertaining. Some warn that Sophia isn’t as engaging as the other ducks initially, but if you stick with her, you’ll love her too.

The Great Italian Holiday Mix-up book cover

Book Summary

Delaney and her boyfriend, Nicholas, are feeling adventurous, so they’ve signed up with a vacation matchmaking company that is going to plan them a romantic getaway – destination unknown. When Delaney arrives on the Isle of Capri, it seems like the making of the perfect holiday. But then a man named Nick, who is not her boyfriend, walks into her hotel suite. Nick is equally confused to find Delaney rather than his fiancée.

After a series of frantic phone calls, Nick and Delaney discover that because the men share a name, there’s been a mix-up. Their partners are together in Iceland, and the hotel in Capri is fully booked, so they can’t even get separate rooms while waiting to clear up the travel confusion.

Capri, with its beautiful scenery and endless Aperol Spritzes, is one of the most romantic places on Earth. So romantic, in fact, that as Nick and Delaney scramble to fix the mix-up, they may find themselves starting to question if the wrong holiday might just be the right one after all.

Why We Think You’ll Love It

Australian author Sandy Barker has become one of Angela’s favorite rom-com writers whose books are always set in dreamy destinations, so we’re very excited to read her newest book set on the Isle of Capri! Early readers call it a laugh-out-loud read filled with delicious banter and swoony moments.

The Family Holiday book cover

Book Summary

Beth and her family get the opportunity to swap their wintry UK cottage for Amber’s sunny Italian villa for a two-week holiday. While Beth’s home is cozy, Amber’s is fancy and everything a dream vacation is made of, complete with an infinity pool. Or rather, it looked like a dream before it became a nightmare.

The book is told from alternating perspectives between Beth and Amber. We will say this qualifies as a murder mystery, but beyond that, we recommend not reading the publisher’s synopsis, as reviewers say it gives away something that doesn’t happen until pretty far into the book.

Thoughts on This Book

If you loved the movie The Holiday, where Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet trade houses, this book might appeal to you. But keep in mind that it’s a thriller, not a heartwarming holiday tale!

Another Book by This Author

Carley Fortune’s new 2026 release is also a perfect fit for this vacation-themed book list, although it may have a long library wait list.

Our Perfect Storm introduces readers to Frankie and George, lifelong best friends with headstrong personalities who clash but always seem to find a way to come back together. With her wedding approaching, she’s not sure if George will show up to stand by her side as her best man. But he does, and the weekend is off to a perfect start until her fiancé dumps her.

George thinks the best way for her to heal her broken heart is to go on her honeymoon…with him. Frankie agrees, seeing a week-long vacation in the lush rainforests and misty beaches of Tofino, British Columbia, as a chance to finally repair their friendship. But doing so may just unearth long-buried secrets and feelings that neither of them is prepared to deal with.

A Room With a View book cover

Book Summary

While traveling in Florence with her cousin Charlotte, Lucy Honeychurch begins to question the carefully planned life expected of her back home in Edwardian England. On vacation in Italy, she meets the unconventional Emerson family, whose open and passionate approach to life is a sharp contrast to the rigid rules of polite society.

Back home, Lucy becomes engaged to the wealthy and proper Cecil Vyse, but her experiences abroad continue to linger in her mind.

Thoughts on This Classic

This classic novel delivers romance, humor, and sharp social observations for a charming coming-of-age story.

While only the first third of this book is set on vacation in Italy, this section plays an outsized role in the story because it continues to shape her feelings after she returns home.

Book Summary

As a botanist, forty-year-old May prefers spending time with plants over people. She’s a gardener at a local university and likes to observe others’ lives while minimizing her interactions with them. However, in her younger years, she had a group of four close friends.

While it’s not feasible to get the group back together all in one place, May sets out to reconnect with them one by one during an unexpected hiatus from work. Part tale of self-discovery and part story of female friendship, this book also explores themes of life’s offline simplicities vs. images of perfection online.

Inspiration for This Book

While May’s travels might not fit the typical definition of “vacation,” the book includes multiple trips, sightseeing moments, and reflections on travel and visiting etiquette. If you are looking for more of a literary fiction read, this could be a great option.

Fans of Homer’s The Odyssey might notice how this book parallels the Greek epic. Except in this modern re-interpretation, Penelope is the one traveling instead of Ulysses. You may also enjoy the references to classic literature and gardening, though you can still understand and enjoy the book without a passion for either.

Book Summary

Greta James had musical talent from childhood, but her parents had different visions of where that talent would lead. While her mother was her biggest fan, her dad could only see the likely pitfalls of a music career.

She has spent years trying to prove him wrong and has reached the point where she’s appearing on magazine covers and playing sold-out shows. However, with the pressure of a sophomore album and the shock of her mother’s recent death, Greta has an on-stage meltdown that goes viral.

She very reluctantly agrees to join her dad on an Alaskan cruise because she hopes it will give her an escape from media coverage and the pressure of her struggling career. Their relationship is as icy as the Alaskan waters. But together aboard the ship, they will finally come to terms with the baggage of their past so that they can face the future.

Our Thoughts on This Book

This book had much more depth and emotion than we expected going in. While there is an element of romance in the book, it is really the story of a father-daughter vacation that forces them to finally confront their shared grief and the challenges that drove them apart.

It's Not Her book cover

Thoughts on This Book

This is described as a fast-paced murder mystery and missing-person thriller where each and every character is suspicious in some way – just enough to keep you guessing.

What to Expect in This Novel

While the synopsis doesn’t reveal too much, readers say the novel’s pacing is just right, and relevant details are revealed bit by bit without dragging. The novel is said to provide a great balance of drama and depth, with reviewers calling it both suspenseful and unpredictable.

Movie Adaptation

This popular novel was adapted into a Netflix movie in January 2026. Our readers have mixed feelings: some say it’s one of the best page-to-screen adaptations they’ve seen, while others feel the movie wasn’t faithful enough to the book.

Death on the Nile book cover

Book Summary

On a luxurious vacation aboard a steamer traveling the Nile River, wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway seems to have it all -beauty, money, and a new husband. But tensions simmer beneath the glamorous surface, and jealousy and betrayal quickly disrupt the holiday atmosphere.

When Linnet is found murdered, famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must untangle a web of secrets hidden among the travelers. Set against the stunning backdrop of 1930s Egypt, this locked-room mystery features Christie’s signature puzzle-solving style.

About the Series

While this is actually book #18 in the popular Hercule Poirot series, it’s one of the most recognized vacation mysteries of all time, and a great introduction to Agatha Christie. Be warned, though…we hear that once you read one, you won’t be able to stop there!

How Stella Got Her Groove Back book cover

Book Summary

With her 40th birthday on the horizon, successful, overworked stockbroker Stella Payne feels stuck. Her life revolves around work, motherhood, and responsibility. Hoping for a break from it all, she takes a vacation to Jamaica with a friend, where she unexpectedly meets Winston Shakespeare. Winston is much younger and immediately brings excitement, passion, and new possibilities into her life.

As their relationship deepens, Stella must decide how much she is willing to risk for happiness and whether she can let go of the fears and expectations holding her back

Genre and Adaptation Notes

This story was adapted into a 1998 movie starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs. The adaptation remains fairly faithful to the novel’s central premise, but where the book is more introspective, the movie’s tone is a bit lighter and more overtly romantic. The film streamlines many of those internal struggles and emphasizes the romance, humor, friendships, and vacation atmosphere.

Book Summary

Seventy-something Evelyn’s husband turns up dead, wearing his best suit, and with a diamond ring in his pocket (one that doesn’t fit his wife). Evelyn isn’t the type to make impulsive decisions, but when she finds a letter from her husband addressed to a woman on the Isle of Wight, off the southern coast of England, she decides to deliver it by hand.

On the coach, Evelyn meets two other women in their 70s. Cynthia, blunt and outspoken, and Joy, shy but kind. Both women are also headed to the island for their own private reasons. Though wildly different, the three women form an unexpected trio whose journey becomes far more than just a vacation. Together, they travel through loss, laughter, and new beginnings.

What to Expect in This Book

The cover might suggest that this is a light, fluffy book, but readers describe it as a moving and poignant story. While it addresses serious issues, it does so with plenty of joy, resulting in an ultimately uplifting story.

Keep in mind that this novel is set at Christmas time, and the holiday atmosphere is the backdrop of the story. However, the book’s central focus is the relationship between the women rather than holiday traditions.

Three Weeks with My Brother book cover

Book Summary

When a colorful mailer arrived from the Notre Dame alumni association advertising a tour of some of the earth’s most exotic locations, Nicolas Sparks was busy with a book deadline on top of a hectic family life with five children. However, he kept thinking about the trip and had an idea.

In January 2003, Nicholas set off on the trip with his brother. Only one year apart, the brothers were the only surviving members of their family. As they visited the wonders of the world, daredevil Micah and introspective Nicholas had a rare chance to escape daily life and focus on new adventures and childhood tragedies, discovering truths about loss, love, and hope.

Vacation Non-Fiction

While Nicolas Sparks is most known for his fictional storytelling, this non-fiction book tells the true story of a once-in-a-lifetime vacation around the world with his brother.

Happy Ending book cover

Book Summary

Thea and Alex have a lot in common… and yet, somehow, nothing at all. Both are divorced, love food, and hate where they live. But while Alex is a world-class chef, Thea has never cooked. Alex feels stuck in his hometown, and Thea resents the same town for never quite feeling like home. Thea and her ex are battling it out for custody of their dog, while Alex and his ex are amicably co-parenting their daughter.

In just two years’ time, Thea and Alex went from having just a few friends in common to being best friends themselves. But it all started as a lie.

When their exes got together right after getting divorced, Thea and Alex spun a spite-fueled story about being old friends and first loves. Somehow, that ruse has grown into a real friendship, and now their exes have invited them on a joint vacation. A two-week, two-family beach vacation, daughter and dog included.

They really are friends now, but has the story they originally spun gotten away from them? Or is it the start of their happy ending?

Thoughts on This Book

Told in dual timelines, this is described as a slow-burning romance. It deals with how you grieve a relationship, as well as how you pick yourself up to start again.

While this novel is a standalone, it is part of Chloe Liese’s interconnected romance universe. You don’t need to read any of her other books to enjoy this one, but if you have, you may pick up on some fun connections.

In Our Readers’ Words

We read this book more than two decades ago, but after seeing our readers vote it one of the best beach reads of all time, we feel like it’s time for a re-read. Here’s what two of our readers had to say:

“This is a go-to read for me during the summer. The character development is amazing.” -Stacy D.

“Great writing. It is a coming-of-age story. Lots of feelings in this story.” -Brenda W.

Last Summer at the Golden Hotel book cover

Book Summary

For more than sixty years, the Goldman and Weingold families – best friends and business partners – have spent their summer vacations together at their jointly-owned Golden Hotel in the Catskills. But now, the facilities are falling apart, and they have an offer from a developer. Should they renovate, or is it time to sell? Everyone, including the grandchildren on both sides, wants a say in the property’s future during the family reunion.

While this family saga spans only a few days, you’ll also see flashbacks to the glory days of this vacation property and glimpses into the complicated lives of many family members.

Consider This Before Reading

If you loved the setting of family vacations at resort camps featured in movies and TV like Dirty Dancing and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, this would be a great choice!

That said, there are many side characters and storylines to keep track of. If you prefer linear reads with fewer characters, it might not be the best pick.

Murder Takes a Vacation Book Cover

Book Summary

Muriel Blossom, a recently widowed grandmother in her late 60s, stumbles onto a life-changing lottery ticket and seizes the chance to finally travel, booking a river cruise on the Seine. But her dream vacation turns dangerous when she meets Allan, a charming stranger who ends up dead in Paris just a day later.

Now stranded in Europe with no allies, Muriel must rely on her long-buried PI instincts—from years assisting Tess Monaghan—to uncover the truth. As she navigates elegant cafés, midnight river views, and cozy staterooms, she realizes she’s in over her head: her cabin is ransacked, flirtatious younger men circle her, and a cryptic jewel-encrusted bird pulls her into an international art‑heist (and murder) plot.

Other Vacation-Themed Cozies

We considered a number of vacation-themed cozies for this book list, but all had a bit lower ratings than we typically look for. Melissa read Murder Takes a Vacation and enjoyed the river cruise setting, but other cozy mystery titles you might consider include Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds by Allison Brennan, and the Vacation Mysteries series by Catherine Mack, which starts with Everytime I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies.

Book Summary

Do you dream of seeing the Venetian canals, the Amalfi Coast, or wandering through gorgeous Tuscan villages? This novel will transport you to all three dramatically different scenic Italian locations in vivid detail.

Two hundred years ago, Filomena Fontana cursed her sister. Ever since then, every 2nd born sister in the Fontana family has been unable to find love.

Some of the women believe in the curse, and others are skeptical, but when elderly Aunt Poppy invites two of the young second-born sisters on a trip to Italy, promising to have a plan to break the curse, they can’t pass up the chance. The trio of women travels throughout Italy, learning about their family history and uncovering secrets.

Our Thoughts on This Book

If you’re looking for a book to get lost in, this is a charming and light read filled with vivid atmospheric details! While Poppy has ulterior motives for inviting her nieces on this trip, their travels definitely have vacation vibes. The narrator’s Italian accent makes this especially enjoyable in the audiobook format.

Another Italy-Set Book to Consider

If you are interested in a magical realism book set in Italy, consider One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle. Carol and Katy had been planning a mother-daughter vacation to Positano, the magical Italian seaside town where Carol spent a summer long ago. But Carol dies before the trip, and Katy embarks on the adventure alone.

As soon as 30-year-old Katy sets foot on the Amalfi Coast, she can feel her mother’s spirit. She’s taking in the beautiful views and delicious food when her mother appears – but not the mother she just lost. Instead, she meets a healthy, tanned, 30-year-old version of her mother. For One Italian Summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mom, but as the younger woman her mother used to be. Through her encounters with the 30-year-old version of her mom, Katy is inspired to reconsider her own life choices.

Book Summary

Every summer for the past two decades, Rocky’s family has vacationed at the same rental house in Cape Cod. This year, Rocky is squarely sandwiched between her young adult kids, who still need her in many ways, and her aging parents, who are beginning to need her more and more. All the while, Rocky herself is in the throes of menopause, complete with hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy.

As usual, the family’s annual beach week is spent reminiscing about summers past as well as making new memories. But this year, with so much feeling in flux in her own life, Rocky finds herself fixating on an event from her past that she’s kept secret for far too long. She must come to terms with both her family’s history and future.

Our Thoughts on This Book

While this novel takes place over the course of a one-week family vacation to Cape Cod, the flashbacks to past summers allow the author to create richly drawn, complex characters.

Angela loved this book, rating it 4.5 stars, but she’s not surprised that the overall rating of the book is a bit lower. This book takes a deep dive into the not-so-pretty realities of menopause that women of a certain age (and the Book Girls are getting there) will find very relatable and humorous (sometimes in a “laugh so you don’t cry” kind of way). However, younger readers may not enjoy some of the very specific details, and older readers may not be ready to relive them.

Additionally, this book addresses some difficult topics, and readers don’t all agree with Rocky’s decisions, both past and present.
