Jodi Picoult Biography
Born on May 19, 1966, Jodi Picoult was raised on Long Island in New York and knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. Her passion for storytelling led her to Princeton University where we received a degree in creative writing. In 2017 she was ranked among the elite university’s 25 most influential living alumni. She went on to earn a master’s degree in education for Harvard University.
Before the publication of her first novel, Jodi had a variety of jobs ranging from technical writer for a Wall Street brokerage firm to ad agency copywriter, and from text book editor to 8th grade English teacher.
She wrote her first novel, Songs of the Humpback Whale, while pregnant with her first child, then drew upon her early experiences with motherhood in her sophomore novel, Harvesting the Heart. Her three children are now grown, but reflecting on her work-life balance, she says she was a better mother because of her writing, and a better writer because of motherhood.
Jodi and her husband, Tim van Leer, live in Hanover, New Hampshire, and many of her novels are set in and around New England.
